Nationals Official Says Quiet Part Loud About Targeting Catholic Players and Tracking Fans

Sean Hudson probably woke up that morning thinking it was just another day at the office. He had no idea he was about to become the poster child for everything Americans suspect is happening behind closed doors in professional sports. The Washington Nationals’ Director of Community Relations got caught on undercover video admitting he discriminates against players because of their faith, tracks fans who show up to games, and yeah, he’s got a communist agenda. O’Keefe Media Group released the footage, and it’s the kind of stuff that makes your blood run cold.

Hudson singled out Trevor Williams, the team’s starting pitcher, specifically because Williams is Catholic. Not because he can’t throw a fastball. Not because he’s bad for team morale. Because he goes to church. Hudson’s comments came up while discussing the Los Angeles Dodgers’ infamous Pride Night fiasco, where they featured a drag group calling themselves the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence. These folks dressed up as nuns and performed on a crucifix, mocking one of Christianity’s most sacred symbols. The Dodgers got hammered for it, and rightfully so.

Williams himself spoke up about that incident with the kind of clarity we desperately need more of in this country. He said baseball stadiums should be places where everyone feels welcomed, 100 percent of people. But that Dodgers stunt was clearly aimed at one religion. Someone’s got to draw a line in the sand, Williams said. He’s right. When did it become controversial to say that mocking someone’s faith is wrong?

Here’s what really gets under my skin about this whole thing. Hudson isn’t some fringe employee working in the mailroom. He’s the Director of Community Relations. His entire job is supposed to be about bringing people together, building bridges, making the Nationals a team that represents Washington. Instead, he’s admitting on camera that he’s using his position to discriminate based on religious beliefs. That’s not just unprofessional. It’s un-American.

The surveillance aspect is almost worse because it’s so casually Orwellian. Hudson admitted they’re digitally tracking fans who come to Nationals Park. Think about that for a second. You buy a ticket, you show up to watch some baseball, maybe grab a hot dog, and someone’s building a file on you. For what purpose exactly? What are they doing with that information? Who else gets access to it?

This isn’t about being anti-progress or anti-technology. It’s about the creeping authoritarianism that’s infected every institution in America, including sports. Baseball used to be the one place where politics took a backseat. You rooted for your team, you booed the umpire, you went home. Now we’ve got executives with political agendas using their positions to push ideology and punish anyone who doesn’t fall in line.

The communist agenda part shouldn’t surprise anyone who’s been paying attention. These folks don’t even hide it anymore. They think they’re the enlightened ones, the ones who know better than the rest of us how society should work. Individual liberty? That’s outdated. Free markets? Oppressive. Traditional values? Bigotry. They’ve got it all figured out, and if you disagree, well, you’re just on the wrong side of history.

Trevor Williams had the guts to stand up and say something when the Dodgers crossed the line. Now he’s apparently being penalized for it by his own organization. That should terrify every American who values religious freedom. The First Amendment isn’t a suggestion. It’s the foundation of everything else we hold dear.
