President Trump just handed Bill Maher the kind of review that would make any entertainer wince. In a scathing Truth Social post late Saturday, Trump eviscerated both the HBO host and California Governor Gavin Newsom after watching what he described as an embarrassingly weak interview performance.
The president’s frustration wasn’t just aimed at Maher himself. Trump opened with a direct challenge to Fox News and other conservative outlets, questioning why they keep giving airtime to someone who clearly doesn’t represent Republican values. It’s a fair point, honestly. How many times have we watched conservative commentators reference Maher as if he’s some kind of political weathervane worth consulting?
Trump’s personal recollection of hosting Maher at the White House adds a layer most people didn’t see coming. According to the president, Maher walked into the Oval Office and immediately asked for a drink. The image is almost comical, this supposedly edgy comedian reduced to nervous energy in the presence of real power. Trump called it endearing but pathetic, and you know what? That tracks with everything we’ve seen from Hollywood types who talk tough from their studios but fold when confronted with actual authority.
The real meat of Trump’s criticism centered on Maher’s inability to challenge Newsom’s obvious distortions about California’s condition. Anyone with eyes can see the Golden State is bleeding residents and drowning in problems. Los Angeles just experienced catastrophic fires. San Francisco has become synonymous with urban decay. The homeless crisis has turned once-beautiful streets into open-air disasters. That high-speed rail project? Billions over budget and still nowhere near completion.
Yet there sat Newsom, spinning fairy tales about California’s success while Maher apparently lacked either the knowledge or the spine to push back effectively. This is exactly the kind of weak journalism that drives Americans crazy. We don’t need friendly chats between coastal elites who share the same zip codes and probably the same donor lists. We need accountability. We need someone willing to say the emperor has no clothes when the emperor is clearly standing there naked.
Trump didn’t hold back on Newsom either, calling him low IQ and incompetent. Some might call that harsh, but look at the results. California is experiencing its worst year in history by multiple metrics. For the first time ever, more people are leaving than arriving. That’s not a talking point. That’s a demographic collapse happening in real time to what was once America’s most aspirational state.
The president also highlighted his own administration’s role in cutting through California’s red tape to allow fire victims to rebuild their homes. Without intervention from EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin and Trump himself, those 25,000 destroyed homes would still be sitting in bureaucratic limbo. That’s the difference between leaders who solve problems and politicians who create them.
Trump’s bottom line was crystal clear. Stop platforming Bill Maher. Stop treating him like he represents anything meaningful about conservative thought or American values. He’s not our voice, and every time Fox puts him on air, they look weak and confused about their own identity.
The shot at Jimmy Kimmel at the end was classic Trump, calling Maher slightly more talented than the ABC host who recently joked about Melania having “the glow of an expectant widow.” That line crossed every boundary of decency, especially given the multiple assassination attempts against this president. Kimmel tried walking it back as a joke about their age difference, but nobody’s buying that excuse.
This whole episode reveals something larger about our media landscape. Too many conservative outlets seem desperate for approval from the left-leaning entertainment establishment. They treat guys like Maher as if getting his occasional agreement on something validates their own positions. It doesn’t. It just makes them look desperate for acceptance from people who fundamentally oppose everything they claim to stand for.
Trump’s right to call this out. We need media figures who actually challenge progressive failures instead of providing cover for them.
