Something remarkable just happened in Colorado, and it should make every person who cares about fairness in sports sit up and take notice. Activists managed to gather enough signatures to put biological sex protections in women’s sports on the November ballot in one of the bluest states in America. Not just enough signatures, mind you. They exceeded the requirement by 25 percent.
Jennifer Sey, the founder and CEO of XX-XY Athletics and a former gymnastics champion, broke the news on “The Riley Gaines Show” with barely contained energy. “Here in, I mean deep blue Colorado, it is not a purple state anymore, as you know, it is blue, we got the signatures we needed to put this to the people in November,” she said. The implications are massive. If grassroots organizers can pull this off in Colorado, no blue state is off limits.
This represents a fundamental shift in strategy. For years, conservatives watched as legislatures in progressive strongholds dismissed concerns about biological males competing against girls and women. The usual channels were blocked. Lawmakers wouldn’t listen. Advocacy fell on deaf ears. So activists did what Americans have always done when their representatives fail them. They went directly to the people.
Sey’s organization has been vocal about what’s at stake here. When biological boys compete in girls’ sports, they don’t just win. They dominate. They shatter records. They take scholarships, podium spots, and opportunities that girls have worked their entire lives to earn. This isn’t about bigotry or hatred. It’s about the basic physics of human biology and the reality that Title IX was designed to protect female athletes from exactly this kind of unfair competition.
The ballot initiative strategy is brilliant because it bypasses the usual gatekeepers. You know what happens when you put this question directly to voters? They get it. Regular people understand that fairness matters. They see their daughters training for hours, pushing their bodies to the limit, only to lose to someone with an undeniable biological advantage. Common sense hasn’t been legislated out of the average American yet, despite the best efforts of some activists and their allies in state capitals.
Colorado won’t be alone. Sey made that clear when she described this as “the next wave” of ballot initiatives targeting blue and purple states. The movement is spreading because parents are tired of being told they’re hateful for wanting fair competition. They’re exhausted by the gaslighting that insists biology doesn’t matter and that questioning this new orthodoxy makes you a bad person.
The opposition will be fierce, of course. Progressive activists and their allies in media will paint these ballot measures as attacks on vulnerable communities. They’ll invoke civil rights language and claim this is about discrimination rather than athletic fairness. But here’s the thing about going straight to voters. People can see through the rhetoric when the question is simple and the stakes are clear.
Getting the measure on the ballot was just the first hurdle. Now comes the harder part. “We’re not done yet because now we need people to vote for it,” Sey noted. That means organizing, educating voters, and countering the inevitable flood of opposition funding that will pour into Colorado from national progressive groups. This will be a test case watched by activists across the country.
The beauty of the ballot initiative process is that it returns power to where it belongs. Not to unelected bureaucrats or ideologically captured legislatures, but to the people themselves. That’s how democracy is supposed to work. When representatives won’t represent, citizens can take matters into their own hands.
This November, Colorado voters will decide whether girls’ sports should be protected based on biological sex. Win or lose, the fact that this question is even on the ballot in deep blue Colorado tells you everything about where the momentum is heading.
