John Fetterman isn’t exactly known for toeing the party line. The Pennsylvania senator showed up to Washington in gym shorts and hoodies, thumbed his nose at Senate dress codes, and generally acted like someone who couldn’t care less about political theater. So when Fetterman tells his own party they’re careening toward communism, maybe it’s time to listen.
The Democratic senator went on The Will Cain Show this week and didn’t hold back. He called Tuesday night’s New York primaries “a huge night for the dirtbag left” and warned that the Democratic Party is “drifting firmly into communism.” Those aren’t words you throw around lightly in American politics, even if you’re the guy who wore a Carhartt hoodie to meet the president.
Here’s what happened. Three Democratic socialists just steamrolled mainstream Democrats in New York primaries, and one of them is Darializa Avila Chevalier. She’s previously called America an “effing disgrace” and wants to abolish ICE, police, and prisons. Not reform them. Abolish them. Let that sink in for a second. We’re talking about someone who might actually hold elected office while believing the fundamental institutions that keep society functioning should simply cease to exist.
Fetterman pointed out something that should alarm anyone paying attention. There’s a perfect correlation emerging in Democratic politics right now. If you want to win a primary in certain districts, you’d better hate Israel with the passion of a thousand suns. And according to Fetterman, that anti-Israel sentiment doesn’t exist in a vacuum. It bleeds into anti-American views, anti-Western civilization views. The whole package deal.
You know what’s wild? This is coming from a Democrat. Not some conservative commentator or Republican operative trying to score political points. This is a sitting senator from Pennsylvania looking at his own party and sounding the alarm. When was the last time you saw that kind of honesty?
The traditional Democratic Party, for all its flaws, used to believe in American institutions. They wanted to reform them, improve them, make them work better for working people. That was the whole point. But what Fetterman’s describing isn’t reform politics anymore. It’s revolution politics. There’s a massive difference between saying “we need better policing” and “we need zero policing.”
These aren’t fringe candidates in some backwater district nobody’s heard of. This is New York City, one of the most important political laboratories in America. What happens there ripples outward. When socialist candidates start winning primaries in New York by running on platforms that would make even Bernie Sanders uncomfortable, that tells you something about where the energy is in the Democratic base right now.
The irony is almost too much. Fetterman himself was considered part of the progressive wing when he first ran. He talked about marijuana legalization, criminal justice reform, all the standard progressive stuff. But even he’s looking at what’s coming up behind him and thinking, “Wait, this isn’t what I signed up for.”
Here’s the thing about political parties. They’re living organisms that evolve and change. Sometimes that evolution is healthy. Sometimes it’s not. When your evolution takes you from “Medicare for All” to “abolish all prisons,” you’ve jumped the shark. You’ve left the realm of serious policy discussion and entered something else entirely.
The Democratic Party has a choice to make. They can listen to voices like Fetterman’s, or they can let the loudest and most extreme voices drag them further left into territory where most Americans simply won’t follow. Because here’s a truth that doesn’t care about your feelings: America isn’t going to vote for communism. Not now, not ever. We’ve seen how that movie ends, and it doesn’t end well.
