Gavin Newsom Got Caught in Another Lie About His Diaper Deal

Gavin Newsom stood in front of cameras last May and told Californians his administration secured a deal to provide free diapers to new parents through a “competitive bidding process.” That sounded great. Transparency, fiscal responsibility, good government doing good things for families. Except there’s one problem. It wasn’t competitive at all.

The state’s own contract database lists the $6.2 million agreement with nonprofit Baby2Baby as “NON-COMPETITIVELY BID.” CBS California Investigates caught this discrepancy, and suddenly the Newsom administration found itself in the awkward position of explaining why the governor’s words don’t match the paperwork. The contract itself wasn’t even released until Friday, well after questions started piling up about why it was being kept under wraps.

Here’s what gets me about this whole thing. We’re not talking about some emergency situation where the state needed to move fast to save lives. This is a diaper program. A nice gesture, sure. Families with newborns at participating California hospitals will get 400 free diapers. That’s helpful. But you know what else would be helpful? Following the rules your administration claims to follow.

When government officials say “competitive bidding,” they’re invoking a sacred principle of public accountability. It means taxpayer dollars get spent wisely because multiple vendors compete for the contract. Prices stay reasonable. Quality stays high. The process stays clean. Without competition, you’re basically trusting that whoever got picked is giving taxpayers a fair shake. Maybe they are. Maybe Baby2Baby is wonderful and this is the best possible use of $6.2 million. But we’ll never know because nobody else got a chance to make their case.

This isn’t Newsom’s first rodeo with creative interpretations of procurement rules. California has a long history of sweetheart deals dressed up as competitive processes. The state’s budget is so massive that a few million here or there barely registers as a rounding error. But those millions add up, and the pattern matters more than any single contract.

The timing of the contract release raises its own questions. Why wait until Friday to publish it? Why only after journalists started asking uncomfortable questions? Government transparency shouldn’t work like pulling teeth. If everything was above board, release the contract when you announce the program. Let people see exactly what their money is buying.

Baby2Baby itself isn’t some fly-by-night operation. The nonprofit works with celebrities and has legitimate credentials in the charitable space. Kelly Sawyer Patricof and Norah Weinstein, the co-CEOs, probably do good work helping families in need. That’s not the issue. The issue is whether California taxpayers got the best possible deal, and whether their governor told them the truth about how that deal came together.

Limited government conservatives have been saying for years that this is exactly how bureaucracy operates when nobody’s watching closely enough. Programs get announced with fanfare. Press releases go out. Photo ops happen. Then the actual details emerge later, quietly, often contradicting the initial spin. It’s not malicious necessarily. It’s just how Sacramento works when accountability becomes optional.

California families deserve better than this. They deserve a government that says what it means and means what it says. Competitive bidding isn’t just bureaucratic box-checking. It’s how we protect public resources from waste and favoritism. When leaders skip that process then claim they didn’t, trust erodes. And trust, once gone, doesn’t come back easily.
