CNN Discovers White Kids at Patriot Games and Somehow This Is News

So CNN decided the biggest story about the Patriot Games wasn’t the celebration of young athletes or American achievement. No, what really mattered to Audie Cornish and her crew was counting how many white faces showed up. They even ran an analysis. An actual analysis. Because apparently that’s what passes for journalism these days.

Let me get this straight. We’ve got an event sponsored by Freedom250 where teenagers compete in athletic challenges, the President shows up to celebrate them, and CNN’s burning question is why there weren’t enough kids of the right color? This is what we’re doing now?

Cornish went on her morning show Wednesday and couldn’t help herself. “The president promised the best of the best student athletes. I’m not sure that’s what we got,” she said, dripping with that particular brand of media condescension we’ve all come to recognize. Then came the kicker. CNN’s crack investigative team scrolled through Instagram and discovered that many participants attend private Christian schools and “appear to be overwhelmingly White.”

You know what’s fascinating here? The application didn’t specify race. Read that again. The application was blind to race, but CNN still found a problem. Which tells you everything about where their heads are at. They’re so obsessed with demographic bean counting that they can’t see past melanin levels to appreciate young Americans competing and celebrating their country.

The comparison to the Hunger Games is particularly rich. Yeah, teenage athletes doing obstacle courses and celebrating traditional American values is totally like kids murdering each other in a dystopian novel. The hyperbole would be funny if it weren’t so insulting to everyone involved.

Here’s what really grinds my gears about this whole thing. These are kids. Teenagers between 14 and 17 years old who submitted video essays about why they wanted to compete. They put themselves out there. They tried. And now they’re being used as props in CNN’s endless crusade to find racism under every rock. Cornish even said “I don’t want to make fun of these kids,” right before proceeding to do exactly that by questioning their legitimacy.

The complaint about kids representing states where they don’t live is equally hollow. Have these people never heard of boarding schools? Summer programs? Kids who move? The nitpicking feels desperate, like they started with a conclusion and worked backward to justify it.

What CNN really can’t stand is the whole package. Private Christian schools. Traditional values. Kids who aren’t ashamed to be patriotic. An event that celebrates American exceptionalism without apologizing for it. This is what sticks in their craw. The whiteness angle is just the weapon they reach for because it’s effective and it shuts down conversation.

We’ve reached this bizarre place where color blindness, the thing we were told to aspire to for decades, is now considered suspect. An event that doesn’t ask about race in its application gets attacked for not producing the right racial outcome. You can’t win this game because the rules keep changing based on who’s holding the scorecard.

The truth nobody wants to say out loud? Not every demographic participates in every activity at the same rate. That’s not racism. That’s reality. Different communities have different interests, different priorities, different cultural touchstones. A youth event centered on traditional American patriotism and Christian values is going to attract families who share those values. This isn’t complicated.

But acknowledging that simple truth would require CNN to give up their favorite narrative. It would mean admitting that disparate outcomes don’t automatically equal discrimination. It would mean judging people as individuals rather than representatives of demographic categories. And we can’t have that, can we?

The real story here isn’t about who showed up to the Patriot Games. It’s about a media establishment so consumed by identity politics that they literally cannot see anything else. They’ve got one lens, one filter, one way of understanding the world. Everything is about race, everything is about power dynamics, everything is about who’s oppressed and who’s privileged.

Meanwhile, those kids competed. They celebrated their country. They met the President. And they probably had the time of their lives, blissfully unaware that cable news anchors were busy delegitimizing their accomplishments based on a demographic audit.

That’s the America CNN wants. One where we’re constantly measuring, constantly judging, constantly finding fault based on superficial characteristics. Where achievement gets an asterisk if the achievers don’t look right. Where teenage athletes become political pawns in an endless culture war.

I’ll take the Patriot Games version instead. The one where kids compete, work hard, and celebrate what makes this country worth fighting for. Even if that makes me “overwhelmingly” out of step with the mainstream media.
