There’s something deeply unsettling about watching American political leaders roll out the welcome mat for representatives of one of the world’s most oppressive regimes. But that’s exactly what happened when Ahmed Husain, a prominent member of the Democratic Socialists of America’s National Political Committee, welcomed a Chinese Communist Party delegation in New York City and declared China “an incredible positive vision of socialism for everyone around the world.”
Let that sink in for a moment. We’re talking about the same China that runs concentration camps for Uighur Muslims, suppresses religious freedom, censors the internet, and maintains a social credit system that would make George Orwell blush. That’s the “positive vision” Husain wants to promote.
Husain didn’t mince words about his organization’s intentions either. “We try to push socialism into the masses of America,” he stated plainly. The DSA, which he describes as the largest socialist group in the country with more than 200 chapters across most states, is working through what he calls different sites of struggle. Housing, labor unions, and elections. These are the pressure points where they’re applying force, hoping to reshape America’s economic and political landscape.
You know what strikes me most about this? The honesty. In an age where politicians wrap their true beliefs in layers of focus-grouped language and poll-tested phrases, here’s someone actually saying the quiet part out loud. They’re not trying to incrementally reform capitalism or tweak tax policy around the edges. They want to fundamentally transform America into a socialist nation, and they’re looking to Communist China as their blueprint.
This is the same Ahmed Husain who spoke on the DSA’s “Hands Off Iran” mass video call back in early March. Nearly 1,000 people joined that Wednesday night meeting, which opened with a remake of Bob Dylan’s “Masters of War.” The irony is rich. They’re singing protest songs written during the Cold War while championing the very authoritarian systems those songs were meant to oppose.
The DSA’s growth should concern anyone who values individual liberty and free markets. With 200 chapters spread across the country, they’ve built real infrastructure. They’re not just talking. They’re organizing, mobilizing, and yes, winning some elections. Look at members like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and other progressive lawmakers who proudly wear the DSA label. This isn’t fringe anymore, even if their ideas remain fundamentally at odds with American values.
What bothers me isn’t that socialists exist or that they organize. This is America. People have the right to advocate for terrible ideas. What bothers me is the willful blindness required to hold up China as any kind of model worth emulating. China’s “socialism” has lifted people out of poverty primarily by embracing market reforms, not by adhering to pure communist principles. And whatever economic gains they’ve achieved came at the cost of basic human dignity and freedom.
The free market isn’t perfect. Capitalism has its flaws, and reasonable people can debate how best to address inequality and opportunity. But there’s a world of difference between thoughtful reform and importing the ideological framework of a regime that surveils its citizens, disappears dissidents, and crushes any hint of political opposition. That’s not a vision. That’s a nightmare dressed up in revolutionary rhetoric.
Americans deserve to know what organizations like the DSA actually stand for and what they’re working toward. Not the sanitized version, but the truth spoken in rooms where they think only true believers are listening.
