Empty Chairs and Empty Answers as Democrats Skip Terrorism Hearing

There’s something deeply unsettling about watching elected officials simply refuse to do their jobs. Wednesday’s Senate Judiciary subcommittee hearing on the Muslim Brotherhood’s alleged network operating inside the United States should have been standing room only. Instead, it looked like a ghost town on one side of the aisle.

Every single Democratic member of the subcommittee decided they had better things to do than discuss terrorism threats on American soil. Not one showed up. Senator Ted Cruz didn’t mince words when he opened the hearing by pointing to the empty chairs where his Democratic colleagues should have been sitting. He called it what it was: an embarrassment.

You know what makes this even more telling? The timing. Just as Abdul El-Sayed, son-in-law to a leading member of several Brotherhood groups, won Michigan’s Democratic primary for U.S. Senate, Democrats suddenly found themselves too busy to attend a hearing about the very organization connected to their new candidate. Coincidence? Cruz doesn’t think so, and frankly, neither should anyone paying attention.

Cruz went further, connecting dots that the mainstream media seems desperate to ignore. El-Sayed campaigned alongside Hasan Piker, a left-wing streamer who once said America deserved 9/11. Let that sink in for a moment. A Democratic Senate candidate shares a stage with someone who justified the worst terrorist attack on American soil, and his party colleagues can’t even bother showing up to a hearing about terrorist networks.

The absence speaks volumes about where the Democratic Party finds itself today. We’re watching a political movement that once took national security seriously transform into something unrecognizable. When confronting hard truths about radical organizations becomes optional, when political convenience trumps the safety of American citizens, we’ve crossed a dangerous line.

This isn’t about partisan grandstanding. It’s about basic accountability. The Muslim Brotherhood’s history is well documented. Their stated goals, their methods, their networks spreading across the globe including right here at home deserve serious examination by serious people. That’s literally what these senators get paid to do.

But here’s the uncomfortable reality that Democrats seem unwilling to face. Their party is shifting, embracing voices and candidates that would have been unthinkable just a decade ago. The progressive wing isn’t just pushing for different tax policies or healthcare approaches anymore. They’re fundamentally redefining what the party stands for, who it welcomes, and what threats it’s willing to acknowledge.

Cruz asked the witnesses what El-Sayed’s rise says about the Democratic Party’s direction. The empty chairs already answered that question. When you can’t even show up to discuss terrorism because it might complicate your political messaging or upset your base, you’ve lost the plot entirely.

The American people deserve better than this calculated cowardice. They deserve elected officials who take threats seriously, who show up even when it’s uncomfortable, who put national security above political expediency. Those empty seats represent more than just absent senators. They represent a party that’s chosen willful blindness over difficult conversations.

This is how democracies weaken from within. Not through dramatic coups or foreign invasions, but through slow erosion of responsibility, through leaders who simply stop doing the hard work of governing when it becomes politically inconvenient. The Democrats who skipped this hearing sent a clear message about their priorities, and Americans should remember it.
