FBI Arrests Democratic Mayor Brian DePena for Funneling $1.5 Million in Pandemic Funds

Here’s what you need to know about government fraud: it’s not complicated, it’s not sophisticated, and it happens every single day under our noses. Lawrence, Massachusetts Mayor Brian DePena got arrested Friday for doing exactly what too many politicians think they can get away with. He allegedly stole $1.5 million in COVID relief funds. Not for the city. Not for his constituents. For himself.

The FBI says DePena funneled pandemic money into his campaign coffers, paid off personal taxes, and knocked down $880,000 worth of mortgages on various properties he owned. This is wire fraud and money laundering, according to federal prosecutors. You know what makes this worse? DePena is the same mayor who went viral last year because he struggled to speak English during public appearances. The city of Lawrence trusted him anyway. They believed in him. And this is how he repaid that faith.

U.S. Attorney Leah B. Foley didn’t mince words. “Mayor DePena was elected to be a leader for the City of Lawrence. He was looked up to and trusted by his constituents, but he betrayed that trust through his alleged corruption and lies.” She’s right. This isn’t just about money. It’s about betrayal at the most fundamental level.

Born in the Dominican Republic, DePena served as mayor of Lawrence, a city sitting about 25 miles north of Boston. The community gave him a chance. They elected him to lead them. And if these allegations prove true, he turned around and robbed them blind while families were struggling through a pandemic.

Let’s talk about the bigger picture here because this case illustrates something critical. COVID relief funds were supposed to help Americans weather an unprecedented crisis. Small businesses needed lifelines. Families needed support. Instead, we got a parade of fraud cases that would make your head spin. The sheer volume of pandemic relief theft across this country represents one of the largest failures of government oversight in modern history.

This is what happens when Washington throws trillions of dollars at problems without proper safeguards. Limited government isn’t just a philosophical position. It’s a practical necessity because bloated bureaucracies can’t track money, can’t prevent fraud, and can’t hold people accountable until the damage is already done. The FBI deserves credit for making this arrest, but how much money got stolen before they caught on?

DePena’s alleged crimes cut deeper because of the trust involved. Mayors aren’t distant figures in Washington. They’re community leaders. People see them at local events, at town halls, walking down Main Street. When a mayor steals from his own city, it poisons the well for everyone who comes after. It makes people cynical about government, about leadership, about the possibility of honest public service.

The irony stings. A man who couldn’t effectively communicate in English somehow managed to communicate just fine with banks, campaign operatives, and whoever else helped him allegedly launder $1.5 million. Funny how that works. Competence appears when there’s personal gain involved.

This arrest should serve as a warning. Federal prosecutors are watching. The days of treating pandemic relief like a personal piggy bank are over. But the damage is done. Billions vanished into fraudulent schemes while honest Americans followed the rules and struggled to make ends meet. That’s not justice. That’s not the America we’re supposed to be building.

DePena deserves his day in court. Everyone does. But if these charges stick, he should face the full weight of the law. Public corruption destroys communities from the inside out. It makes people stop believing in the system. And once that trust evaporates, getting it back takes generations.
