Frank Gaffney Sounds Alarm on Radical Left and Islamist Partnership Targeting America

Frank Gaffney doesn’t mince words. The Reagan-era defense official sat down recently to discuss something most Americans either don’t see or refuse to acknowledge: a growing partnership between radical Islamists and far-left socialists who’ve found common ground in their shared contempt for everything America represents.

Call it the red-green alliance. Red for the socialist left, green for Islamist movements. And according to Gaffney, they’re working together with frightening efficiency.

“One can argue that the Sharia supremacists are pursuing communism with a God, or at least a patina, a veneer of religiosity to it,” Gaffney explained. He’s not exaggerating for effect here. These groups share something fundamental: totalitarianism. Sure, they envision different endgames, but right now they’re perfectly content making common cause. Their immediate shared objective? Destroying the United States, which stands squarely in the way of both their ambitions.

This isn’t some conspiracy theory cooked up in a basement. Gaffney served as assistant secretary of defense for international security policy under President Ronald Reagan. He’s got credentials from Georgetown and Johns Hopkins. In 1988, he founded the Center for Security Policy think tank in Washington. The man knows what he’s talking about when it comes to national security threats.

The alliance makes sense when you step back and look at it clearly. Both movements despise the American constitutional system. Both reject individual liberty and free-market capitalism. Both want to fundamentally remake society according to their own rigid visions. The fact that one group prays to Allah and the other worships at the altar of Marx matters less than you’d think when their tactics and targets align so perfectly.

You know what’s really troubling? This red-green axis isn’t operating in shadows anymore. It’s making inroads into the Democratic Party itself. We saw this play out vividly after October 7, 2023, when Democratic Socialists of America organized protests in solidarity with Palestinians. About 1,000 protesters showed up in New York City, and the message wasn’t subtle.

The Senate Judiciary subcommittee even held a hearing on this earlier this month. They called it “Hidden in Plain Sight: Confronting the Muslim Brotherhood Network in America.” Senator Ted Cruz questioned Kyle Shideler, who directs homeland security and counterterrorism analysis at the Center for Security Policy, about whether the Muslim Brotherhood partners with groups like the Democratic Socialists of America. Shideler confirmed what Gaffney’s been warning about.

These aren’t fringe players we’re talking about. The Democratic Socialists of America has grown substantially in recent years. They’ve got members in Congress. They’re influencing policy debates and shifting the Overton window on what’s considered acceptable political discourse. And they’re doing it while holding hands with Islamist organizations that share none of their professed values on women’s rights, LGBTQ issues, or religious freedom.

The hypocrisy is staggering when you think about it. The far left claims to champion progressive social values, yet they align themselves with movements that would crush those very freedoms under Sharia law. But that’s the thing about totalitarians. They’ll partner with anyone if it helps them tear down the existing order. They figure they can sort out their differences after America falls.

Gaffney argues we’re at a critical moment. “So that’s where we find ourselves at the moment, with a red-green axis that seeks the destruction of our country and is making that a goal being pursued now in the Democratic Party.” Those are strong words, but look at the evidence. Look at who’s organizing protests, who’s funding campus activism, who’s shaping narratives about America as an oppressive force that needs dismantling.

This alliance operates on college campuses, in community organizations, and increasingly within mainstream political institutions. They’ve figured out that separately they face resistance, but together they can amplify their message and overwhelm opposition. It’s strategic, calculated, and effective.

The American constitutional system, with its protections for individual rights and limits on government power, stands as an obstacle to both groups’ ambitions. That’s why they’ve temporarily set aside their theological and ideological differences. First comes the revolution. First comes tearing down what exists. They’ll worry about who gets to build on the ruins later.

This isn’t about being alarmist. It’s about recognizing patterns and calling them what they are. When radical movements with totalitarian impulses join forces against constitutional democracy, free people need to pay attention. History’s full of examples where such alliances succeeded because good people dismissed the threat until too late.
