Identity Theft Allowed Illegal Immigrant to Vote for 20 Years Before Getting Caught

Carlos Felipe Jaramillo-Grajales just got three years behind bars, and honestly, that feels light considering he spent roughly two decades doing something that should make every American’s blood boil. This illegal alien from Colombia didn’t just overstay a visa or work under the table. He stole someone’s identity, lied about being a citizen, got a driver’s license, and then voted in our elections. For twenty years.

Think about that for a second. Twenty years of fraudulent ballots. Twenty years of a foreign national helping decide who represents American citizens. Twenty years of making a mockery of the one sacred thing that separates citizens from everyone else on the planet who’d love to live here.

DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin put it plainly when he said election security is national security. He’s right. Only Americans should be electing American leaders. That’s not xenophobia or paranoia. That’s the basic foundation of a sovereign nation. You know what happens when we lose control of who votes? We lose everything else too.

Lisa Boothe has been sounding the alarm on this issue, and she’s not wrong to call out the absurdity of our current system. We’re essentially running on an honor system when it comes to citizenship verification. Think about that. We require ID to buy cold medicine, to board a plane, to open a bank account. But in many places, proving you’re actually a citizen before voting? That’s somehow considered controversial.

The case of Jaramillo-Grajales isn’t some isolated incident either. States keep discovering noncitizens on their voter rolls. Sometimes it’s accidental. Sometimes it’s not. The problem is we’ve built a system so porous that we can’t always tell the difference. And when lawmakers try to tighten things up, they get accused of voter suppression. It’s maddening.

Here’s the thing about voter ID laws and stronger verification. They’re not about keeping legitimate voters away from the polls. They’re about making sure the person casting that ballot has the legal right to do it. Every fraudulent vote dilutes a real citizen’s voice. It’s theft, plain and simple.

The Democrats talk a good game sometimes. Chuck Schumer once said his party supports voter ID. Then every single Senate Democrat voted against a GOP bill that would’ve strengthened verification requirements. You can’t have it both ways. Either you believe in secure elections or you don’t.

What Jaramillo-Grajales did required planning and sustained deception. This wasn’t a mistake or confusion about the rules. He actively participated in identity theft to gain access to something he had no right to touch. Our elections. Our choice of leaders. Our future.

Three years feels inadequate when you consider the damage. Not just the individual fraudulent votes, but the erosion of trust in the system itself. When Americans hear stories like this, they start wondering how many others are out there doing the same thing. They question whether their vote even matters if the system can be gamed this easily.

We need mandatory citizenship verification. We need states talking to each other and cross-referencing databases. We need penalties harsh enough to actually deter this behavior. And we need to stop pretending that asking for proof of citizenship is somehow un-American. What’s un-American is letting foreign nationals decide our elections while we stand around worried about being called names.

The integrity of our elections isn’t a partisan issue. It’s a survival issue. And cases like this one prove we’ve got serious work to do.
