There’s something rotten happening in Montana, and it smells like the kind of backroom dealing that Democrats love to accuse everyone else of doing. The party that never stops lecturing America about protecting democracy and respecting voters just got caught red-handed trying to bully their own Senate nominee out of the race. And they weren’t being subtle about it either.
Alani Bankhead won the Democratic primary fair and square on June 2, taking home nearly 44 percent of the vote in a five-way race. More than 48,000 Montana Democrats cast their ballots, did their civic duty, and picked their candidate. You’d think that would matter to the party that claims to champion every voice and every vote. Turns out those principles evaporate pretty quick when the polls look bad.
According to screenshots shared by Washington Reporter’s Matthew Foldi, Democratic operatives launched what they called a “project” to make Bankhead drop out. The language they used is telling. This wasn’t a gentle suggestion or a private conversation between party leaders. This was an organized pressure campaign, complete with calls to arms sent to activist groups across the state. They even admitted Bankhead hadn’t responded to their “gentler nudges,” so they were ramping things up.
Here’s where it gets really ugly. These operatives were willing to harass members of Bankhead’s family to get what they wanted. Let that sink in for a second. The same people who spend endless hours on social media condemning political harassment were actively organizing it against one of their own. And why? Because they think Seth Bodnar, running as an independent with backing from Chuck Schumer and former Senator Jon Tester, has a better shot at beating Republican Kurt Alme.
Alme is a former U.S. Attorney with President Trump’s endorsement, which apparently terrifies Democrats enough to throw their own nominee under the bus. The calculation is cold and clear. They looked at the numbers, decided Bankhead couldn’t win, and set out to erase the will of their own primary voters. So much for trusting the process.
The deadline pressure makes this even more transparent. Bankhead had to drop out by August 10 to get her name off the ballot, which explains the “all hands on deck” urgency in those leaked messages. When you’re working against a clock, you apparently don’t have time for niceties like respecting the democratic process or treating women candidates with basic dignity.
This is the dark money apparatus in action, folks. Not some conspiracy theory or exaggerated claim, but documented proof of how modern political machines operate when they think nobody’s watching. They’ll use intimidation, family harassment, coordinated pressure campaigns, whatever it takes to install their preferred candidate. The primary voters? Just obstacles to work around.
You know what’s really rich about this whole situation? Democrats have spent years building an entire brand around protecting women in politics, amplifying female voices, and defending democratic norms. But when those principles conflict with winning a Senate seat, they get tossed aside faster than yesterday’s talking points. Bankhead is a woman who won her primary decisively, and her own party is trying to force her out through organized harassment.
The Montana Senate race matters for control of the chamber, which matters for the entire legislative agenda. Everyone understands the stakes. But there’s supposed to be a line between playing hardball politics and trampling on your own stated values. Democrats found that line, looked at it, and kept right on walking.
This isn’t about whether Bodnar or Bankhead would make a better senator. This is about a party that lectures everyone else about democracy while actively working to overturn their own primary results when convenient. It’s about operatives who think 48,000 votes don’t matter if the polls look scary. And it’s about the stunning hypocrisy of championing women in politics right up until one of them becomes inconvenient to your electoral strategy.
