Thomas Reveals Which Universities Won’t Have Him and the Truth Stings

Justice Clarence Thomas just said out loud what every conservative academic and thinker has known for years. There are entire institutions in American higher education where people like him simply aren’t welcome. Not because of lack of credentials or intellect, but because of ideology. Plain and simple.

During a conversation at the Hoover Institute with Peter Robinson, Thomas admitted he’s never set foot in Stanford Law School. Think about that for a second. One of the nine most powerful jurists in America, a man who interprets the Constitution for a living, hasn’t been invited to one of the nation’s premier law schools. “That’s the reality,” Thomas said. “That’s the world we’re in, because there’s certain places that are just presumptively off limits.”

He’s not making this up. He’s not being dramatic. The man is telling you the truth about American academia in 2024, and honestly, it’s a truth most of us already suspected. These aren’t bastions of free inquiry anymore. They’re ideological fortresses where certain viewpoints get the red carpet and others get the door.

Stanford, predictably, rushed out a statement saying they’d be “honored” to host Justice Thomas. Sure they would. Right after what happened to Judge Kyle Duncan speaks volumes about that invitation. Remember him? The federal appellate judge who got shouted down and berated by a DEI administrator at Stanford Law in front of students who were supposedly there to engage with different legal perspectives. That incident wasn’t an anomaly. It was a feature, not a bug.

Thomas went further, pointing out that the intellectual legacy of Thomas Sowell, the brilliant economist who shaped his own worldview, would be completely lost to younger generations if not for YouTube. These ideas aren’t being taught in classrooms. They’re being scrubbed from syllabi because they’re deemed “unpalatable” to the student body. When did we start letting undergraduates determine what counts as acceptable scholarship?

The irony cuts deep here. We’re talking about law schools, places that should be training future lawyers to argue both sides of any case, to understand opposing viewpoints, to think critically rather than emotionally. Instead, they’ve become echo chambers where conservative thought is treated like a contaminant that might infect the carefully curated ideological purity.

You know what gets me? The spokesperson said Stanford’s Constitutional Law Center “regularly hosts members of the judiciary.” That’s lovely. But Thomas wasn’t talking about whether he could technically get through the doors. He was talking about the climate, the culture, the reality that makes such visits either impossible or utterly pointless. There’s a difference between being allowed somewhere and being welcome somewhere.

This goes beyond Thomas or Stanford. It’s about what we’ve allowed to happen to institutions that were supposed to be marketplaces of ideas. When a Supreme Court Justice feels he can’t visit certain universities without facing hostility, something has broken in American education. These places receive billions in federal funding, enjoy tax exemptions, and claim to serve the public good. Yet they’ve become so captured by one political perspective that half the country’s judicial philosophy is essentially banned from campus.

The younger generation deserves better than this intellectual monoculture. They deserve to hear from Thomas Sowell and Clarence Thomas just as much as they deserve to hear from their progressive professors. They deserve the friction of competing ideas, the discomfort of having their assumptions challenged, the growth that only comes from genuine intellectual diversity.

But that’s not the world we’re in, as Thomas said. And pretending otherwise is just lying.
