Rashida Tlaib has found a new hill to die on, and this time it’s at 30,000 feet. The Michigan congresswoman just introduced legislation that would cut off ICE and Border Patrol from accessing TSA passenger data. You read that right. She wants to blind our immigration enforcement agents right where terrorists and criminals are most vulnerable to detection.
The bill carries one of those sanitized Washington names that tells you absolutely nothing about its real intent. The No TSA Data for ICE Act would block Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Customs and Border Protection from using information gathered by the Transportation Security Administration. We’re talking passenger screening records, travel patterns, personally identifiable information that TSA purchases from data brokers. All of it off limits.
This isn’t just bad policy. It’s dangerous theater dressed up as civil rights advocacy.
A TSA spokesperson didn’t mince words in response, and honestly, someone needed to say it plainly. As we approach the 25th anniversary of September 11th, here comes a member of Congress trying to neuter the Department of Homeland Security’s ability to protect Americans from terror threats. The whole reason DHS exists in the first place was to prevent the kind of information silos that allowed nineteen hijackers to slip through our fingers. Does Tlaib want our enemies empowered to attack us again? It’s a fair question that deserves an answer.
The progressive left has convinced itself that immigration enforcement is inherently oppressive. Never mind that every sovereign nation on Earth controls who enters and stays within its borders. Never mind that airports represent critical chokepoints where dangerous individuals can be identified and stopped. Tlaib and her allies see ICE as the villain in every story, even when that story involves keeping Americans safe.
Here’s what gets lost in all the righteous indignation about immigrant rights. We’re not talking about citizens here. We’re talking about noncitizens who may have overstayed visas, committed crimes, or pose security risks. The kind of people our immigration system is designed to identify and remove. But Tlaib wants to create a blind spot at airports because coordinating between federal agencies apparently offends her sensibilities.
The bill would also prevent DHS from barring people from TSA PreCheck based on First Amendment activities like attending protests or criticizing the administration. That sounds noble until you realize it’s solving a problem that doesn’t exist while creating real vulnerabilities in our security infrastructure. It’s the kind of legislative sleight of hand that looks good in a press release but crumbles under scrutiny.
Tlaib’s legislation has zero chance of passing in a Republican Congress, which is probably the only reason she felt comfortable introducing it. This is performative politics for the progressive base, red meat for people who think borders are inherently racist and law enforcement is systemically corrupt. It lets her claim she’s fighting Trump’s immigration agenda while knowing she’ll never have to defend the consequences of her bill becoming law.
You know what’s really happening here? The left is so committed to opposing anything Trump does on immigration that they’ve lost the plot entirely. Coordinating information between federal agencies isn’t authoritarian overreach. It’s basic competence. It’s how government is supposed to work when protecting national security. The fact that this needs explaining tells you everything about how far the Democratic Party has drifted from common sense.
Traditional Americans understand something the progressive wing refuses to acknowledge. Compassion without security is chaos. You can care about treating people humanely while also insisting that our government knows who’s in the country and whether they pose a threat. These aren’t competing values. They’re complementary ones that require adults willing to balance competing interests instead of grandstanding for clicks.
The TSA spokesperson nailed it. This is about preventing another 9/11, about not repeating the catastrophic failures that cost nearly 3,000 American lives. Tlaib can dress up her bill in the language of civil liberties all she wants. What she’s really proposing is willful blindness in the name of ideology, and Americans are tired of paying the price for that kind of recklessness.
