White House Finally Names the Countries Helping China Dodge Our Tariffs

There’s a reason your gut tells you something’s been off with our trade policy for decades. Turns out that instinct was right, and now we’ve got the receipts. The White House just dropped a report Thursday exposing what they’re calling a transshipment scam that’s bleeding America dry to the tune of $26 billion. The culprits? China’s leading the pack, but they’ve got plenty of accomplices.

Here’s how the con works. Foreign exporters, especially the Chinese, route their goods through third countries before shipping them stateside. The products get relabeled with a different country of origin, suddenly qualifying for lower tariffs or dodging them entirely. It’s the international trade equivalent of money laundering, except we’re the ones getting cleaned out.

The report fingers more than 40 countries as high-risk players in this scheme. Panama, Mexico, Colombia, Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Peru, Costa Rica, and the Dominican Republic all made the list. These aren’t just random nations either. They’re strategic waypoints, convenient pit stops where Chinese goods get a quick passport change before continuing their journey to American store shelves.

You know what really grinds my gears about this? We’ve been operating under the assumption that free trade means fair trade. That everyone’s playing by the same rules. Meanwhile, bad actors have been gaming the system for years, and American workers have paid the price. Every dollar lost to tariff evasion is a dollar that could’ve funded infrastructure, defense, or stayed in taxpayers’ pockets.

President Trump’s response was swift. New tariffs hit 60 economies, including Canada, for alleged forced labor practices. The timing’s almost poetic considering Canada just disinvited us from a bridge opening. Nothing says diplomatic maturity quite like uninviting your largest trading partner from a ribbon cutting because you don’t like their policies. But I digress.

Economists are already squabbling over the impact, which is what economists do best. The projection shows these new tariffs generating similar revenue as previous ones, roughly $950 billion over ten years. That’s not pocket change. That’s real money that actually enforces the rules everyone agreed to follow.

Peter Navarro’s been sounding the alarm on China’s trade manipulation for years. The man served time rather than cave to a congressional subpoena, which tells you something about his conviction. Love him or hate him, he understood what many establishment types refused to acknowledge. China doesn’t play fair, and they’ve built an entire economic strategy around exploiting our openness.

The free market only functions when competition’s honest. When one player cheats and 40 others help them do it, that’s not capitalism. That’s theft with extra steps. American manufacturers can’t compete against foreign companies that dodge tariffs, exploit forced labor, and manipulate their currency. They shouldn’t have to.

Limited government doesn’t mean stupid government. It means smart, focused action that protects American interests without suffocating enterprise. Enforcing existing trade law isn’t overreach. It’s the bare minimum we should expect from leadership.

This transshipment scam reveals a larger truth about globalization. The theory sounded great in faculty lounges and corporate boardrooms. Open borders for goods, seamless supply chains, comparative advantage for all. Reality proved messier. Turns out other countries saw our idealism as weakness worth exploiting.

The question now is whether we’ll actually do something about it or just write another report. Americans are tired of being the world’s mark, the sucker at the poker table who keeps betting while everyone else counts cards.
