Alaska’s Decoy Dan Scandal Exposes the Left’s Desperate Election Tricks

There’s something rotten in Alaska, and it smells like vintage Democratic Party desperation. A formal complaint landed on the Federal Election Commission’s desk this week, accusing “Decoy Dan” Sullivan of illegal coordination with leftist groups trying to take down Senator Dan Sullivan. Yeah, you read that right. Two Dan Sullivans. One’s a respected Republican senator. The other’s a 69-year-old retired teacher who conveniently registered as a Republican just days before jumping into the race.

Americans for Public Trust, a conservative watchdog group that actually does its job, filed the complaint. They’re pointing fingers at some pretty suspicious behavior involving Amber Lee, a Democratic political consultant who somehow managed to work for the challenger’s campaign while sitting on the board of the 907 Initiative. That’s the leftist organization that dumped roughly $1.5 million into ads attacking the real Senator Sullivan. You can’t make this stuff up.

Federal law is crystal clear on this point. You don’t get to serve two masters. You can’t simultaneously help a candidate while running an outside group spending big money to benefit that same candidate’s race. It’s not just unethical. It’s illegal. The 907 Initiative funneled about $575,000 into negative ads during the final three months of the primary alone. And here’s the kicker: just before “Decoy Dan” officially announced his candidacy in late May, the 907 Initiative started blasting attack ads against the incumbent senator. Coincidence? Please.

Public records show the challenger’s campaign owed Lee’s consulting firm more than $4,300 for political services. Caitlin Sutherland from Americans for Public Trust put it plainly: “You can’t both work for the campaign and work for the outside group that’s running millions of dollars in advertisements that’s benefiting the campaign that you’re working for.” It’s not complicated unless you’re trying to hide something.

The 907 Initiative naturally claims innocence. They say Lee’s just an unpaid volunteer board member, not an employee. They insist they operated completely independently and had no clue about Lee’s consulting work until reporters started asking questions. Sure. And I’ve got oceanfront property in Arizona to sell you. These people think we’re idiots.

This whole mess matters because control of the United States Senate hangs in the balance. The challenger advanced under Alaska’s top-four system after grabbing just 2.5% of the primary vote. Former Democratic Representative Mary Peltola led with nearly 49.5%, while the real Senator Sullivan secured 41.4%. State election officials initially tried to disqualify the retired teacher over deceptive campaign tactics, but courts ruled he technically met constitutional requirements to run. Sometimes the law protects the wrong people.

Here’s what really grinds my gears. Critics and GOP strategists immediately dubbed him “Decoy Dan” because that’s exactly what he is. This isn’t some principled citizen stepping up to serve his country. This is a bad-faith effort designed to confuse voters and siphon support away from the incumbent to help Peltola. It’s voter manipulation dressed up as grassroots democracy. The left can’t win on ideas anymore, so they resort to these carnival tricks.

The RealClearPolitics aggregate currently shows Peltola leading by only two points. Think about that. A genuine Senate seat could flip because Democrats recruited a human decoy with the same name as the incumbent. This strategy banks on voter confusion, plain and simple. Some people will show up, see two Dan Sullivans on the ballot, and pick the wrong one without realizing what they’ve done. That’s not democracy. That’s fraud with extra steps.

We’re watching the left abandon any pretense of playing fair. When you can’t win on policy, when your ideas consistently fail, when voters reject your vision for America, you get creative. You find a retired teacher with the right name. You fund him quietly through intermediaries. You run millions in attack ads through supposedly independent groups. You coordinate everything while maintaining plausible deniability. And when someone calls you out, you act shocked and offended.

This complaint needs teeth. The FEC needs to investigate thoroughly and hold people accountable if laws were broken. Alaska voters deserve better than this shell game. Senator Sullivan has served his state honorably, and whether you agree with every vote or not, he’s earned the right to run on his record without facing a deliberately confusing ballot designed to trick people. That’s not asking for special treatment. That’s asking for basic honesty in our elections.

The fact that this even needs explaining tells you everything about where we are as a country right now.
