Gavin Newsom’s Private Travel Fund Gets Federal Criminal Investigation

Gavin Newsom has a problem, and it’s not going away with a press release blaming Donald Trump.

The Department of Justice is running a criminal investigation into how California’s governor has been funding his international travel, and the subpoenas tell a story that should make every taxpayer uncomfortable. We’re talking about the California State Protocol Foundation, a nonprofit that’s been bankrolling Newsom’s overseas jaunts while taking millions from companies that just happen to have business before the state. You know what that looks like? It looks exactly like the kind of swamp behavior that voters across the political spectrum claim to hate.

The San Francisco Standard got its hands on subpoenas from early September, and they’re asking for six years of records. Six years. That’s not a fishing expedition. That’s investigators who already smell something rotten and want to document every last bit of it.

Here’s where it gets interesting. Since 2019, Newsom has directed more than $7.5 million in donations to this Protocol Foundation. Let that number sink in for a moment. Roughly $5.1 million came from leftover inaugural funds, which raises its own set of questions about what inaugural money is actually supposed to fund. The rest came from a who’s who of entities with skin in California’s regulatory game.

CVS is on the donor list. Blue Shield’s foundation ponied up cash. There’s Zoox, an autonomous vehicle company testing robotaxis in San Francisco and other California cities. When a company testing cutting-edge technology in heavily regulated markets starts paying for a governor’s travel, that’s not charity. That’s an investment expecting returns.

The feds are looking at something called pay-to-play, which is exactly what it sounds like. Did generous donors benefit from government policies after they opened their wallets? It’s the oldest corruption story in American politics, dressed up in nonprofit paperwork and international travel itineraries.

Newsom’s response tells you everything about how modern Democrats handle accountability. Instead of addressing the actual concerns, his office issued a statement painting him as Trump’s persecuted victim. “Governor Newsom went after the king,” the statement reads, “and as he warned in June, the tyrant is now coming after everyone around him.” It’s political theater designed to rally the base while avoiding the substance entirely.

But here’s the thing. This investigation is happening in the Eastern District of California, under procedures that don’t start with a presidential phone call. Federal prosecutors don’t issue subpoenas for six years of records because someone in the White House got their feelings hurt. They do it because grand juries and investigative teams have found enough smoke to justify looking for fire.

The people being scrutinized include Rebecca Prowda, Newsom’s chief protocol officer who oversees his overseas travel and happens to be married to San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie. When you’re investigating potential corruption, you follow the relationships. That’s how these schemes work. It’s rarely one person acting alone. It’s networks of allies who all benefit from the arrangement.

Look at the other donors. Chris Larsen, a crypto billionaire. The New Venture Fund, a lefty dark money operation. Foundations tied to Susie Tompkins Buell and Lisa Stone Pritzker, both of whom have bankrolled not just Newsom’s political activities but also his wife Jennifer Siebel Newsom’s nonprofits. When the same names keep appearing across multiple money flows involving the same family, investigators take notice.

Newsom wants to be president in 2028. His defenders claim that’s why Trump is supposedly targeting him. But federal criminal investigations don’t materialize out of thin air because someone might run for office someday. They happen because investigators believe laws may have been broken.

The real question isn’t whether Trump has it out for Newsom. The real question is whether California’s governor used a nonprofit to accept millions from entities seeking favorable treatment from his administration. That’s not a partisan question. That’s a basic good government question that every American should want answered honestly.
