Tom Homan, the White House border czar who doesn’t mince words, confirmed Sunday that the Department of Homeland Security is conducting a criminal investigation involving Rep. Ilhan Omar. Her response? She hasn’t heard from anyone at DHS about any investigation.

That’s quite the disconnect, isn’t it?

Homan went on “The Sunday Briefing” and stated plainly that there’s an “ongoing criminal investigation” into the Minnesota Democrat. When pressed for details about immigration or naturalization fraud, the specific allegations that have dogged Omar for years, he declined to elaborate. Fair enough. Active investigations require discretion. But the confirmation alone should raise eyebrows for anyone who’s been paying attention to this saga.

Omar, when asked directly by reporters, dismissed the whole thing with characteristic defiance. “The right wing has always had this s— going, so I don’t really worry about it,” she said. There’s that familiar pattern: deflect, minimize, blame political opponents. It’s become her standard playbook whenever these questions surface.

The allegations aren’t new. Critics have long claimed that Omar married a man alleged to be her brother as part of a citizenship scheme. She’s denied it repeatedly. But denials don’t make investigations disappear, and they certainly don’t answer the substantive questions that keep bubbling up. You know what’s striking here? The sheer persistence of these allegations across multiple years and multiple administrations.

Vice President JD Vance weighed in back in May, claiming the Justice Department was looking into Omar over both the marriage allegations and some eyebrow-raising financial disclosure amendments. Speaking of which, her amended forms and the steep drop in her reported net worth caught national attention for good reason. When public officials suddenly revise their financial disclosures, that’s not just paperwork. That’s a red flag.

DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin added fuel to the fire recently, alluding to possible illegal activity involving Omar’s “whole family migration” to the United States. “If we can prove it, that you shouldn’t have been here in the first place, we will deport you,” Mullin said. That’s not subtle. That’s a cabinet secretary openly discussing denaturalization, which Homan confirmed is possible in cases of proven immigration fraud.

Here’s where this gets really interesting from a policy standpoint. Denaturalization isn’t some theoretical concept the administration just invented. It’s an established legal process for cases where citizenship was obtained through fraud or willful misrepresentation. The process exists precisely because citizenship, that most precious status in American civic life, shouldn’t be available to people who lied and cheated to get it. If someone committed fraud to become a citizen, that citizenship can be revoked. Should be revoked, actually.

The broader context matters here too. We’re living through an immigration crisis that’s fundamentally about respect for law and process. When millions cross our border illegally while others wait years to come here the right way, that’s not just a policy failure. That’s a moral failure. And if a sitting member of Congress obtained her citizenship through fraudulent means, that’s not just hypocrisy. That’s a slap in the face to every immigrant who played by the rules.

Omar represents a district with a large immigrant population. Many of those constituents navigated our immigration system honestly, enduring the delays and complications and costs because they believed in doing things right. How must they feel watching their congresswoman potentially face allegations of gaming that same system?

The question isn’t whether conservatives have been critical of Omar. Of course they have. She’s been a lightning rod since day one. But criticism doesn’t invalidate legitimate questions about potential fraud. The two can coexist. Actually, they must coexist in a functioning democracy where elected officials face scrutiny regardless of their political tribe.

What’s troubling is the media’s reluctance to pursue this story with the same vigor they’d apply to a Republican facing similar allegations. Imagine the coverage if a conservative Republican congresswoman was under DHS investigation for immigration fraud. We’d see wall-to-wall coverage, breathless speculation, calls for immediate resignation. But with Omar, there’s this persistent softness, this tendency to frame legitimate questions as partisan attacks.

Homan’s confirmation changes the dynamic. This isn’t just opposition research or political noise anymore. This is the federal government, under a new administration committed to enforcing immigration law, saying there’s enough here to investigate. That matters. It should matter to everyone who cares about accountability and the rule of law.

Omar can dismiss it as right wing conspiracy theories all she wants. But investigations proceed whether or not their subjects take them seriously. And if there’s substance to these allegations, if evidence exists that she committed immigration fraud, the consequences should be severe and swift. No one, regardless of their political position or personal narrative, should be above the law.
