Now he’s voting like a moderate, flirting with Republican talking points, and there’s genuine speculation he might switch parties altogether.

Representative Brendan Boyle went even further, calling Fetterman “a disgrace” and “a lazy trust fund baby.” That’s the kind of language you’d expect from opposition research, not from fellow Democrats in your own state delegation. When your colleagues start using phrases like that publicly, you’ve crossed a line that’s hard to walk back.

The leaked texts tell a story that should concern anyone who believes in representative government. When aides told Fetterman that Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia wanted to discuss Medicaid cuts and vaccine concerns, his response was dismissive bordering on contemptuous. “I’m convinced they just want free trips to D.C.,” he wrote. This is a children’s hospital we’re talking about. Not lobbyists for Big Tobacco. Not corporate interests trying to wine and dime him. A hospital worried about kids’ healthcare.

Fetterman sold voters a dream of government solving everything, then discovered that actually doing the work of governing is hard and boring and involves meeting with people who don’t put you on television. The progressive-to-moderate pipeline isn’t always about genuine ideological evolution. Sometimes it’s just about taking the path of least resistance.

Pennsylvania Democrats are now openly discussing how to remove him before 2028, which is remarkable considering how hard they fought to get him there. The man beat Dr. Mehmet Oz in what was supposed to be a bellwether race for progressive values. Now those same values seem quaint compared to Fetterman’s apparent main interest, which is cultivating a contrarian brand on cable news.

The funeral situation really crystalizes everything wrong here. Three police officers murdered in the line of duty. Their families planning a memorial. And Fetterman’s calculation wasn’t about honoring service or showing solidarity with law enforcement or representing Pennsylvania’s interests. It was about time management and dress codes. That’s not conservatism or progressivism or any other ism. That’s just being a lousy representative of the people who elected you.

Malcolm Kenyatta, the Democratic National Committee Vice Chair, summed it up pretty well when he attacked Fetterman directly: “You’re a mess.” Short, sweet, accurate. When your own party’s leadership starts lobbing grenades like that, you’ve got problems that go way beyond policy disagreements.

What Pennsylvania deserves is someone who actually shows up for the job. Someone who doesn’t treat meetings with veterans like inconvenient appointments. Someone who understands that honoring fallen officers isn’t optional. Whether that person is a Democrat or Republican matters less than whether they grasp the basic concept of public service. Fetterman clearly doesn’t, and his party finally figured that out.
