There’s something almost refreshing about a politician who tells you exactly what they plan to do, even when what they’re planning should terrify every freedom-loving American. Darializa Avila Chevalier, a Democrat running for Congress in New York, isn’t playing the usual games. She’s not hiding behind focus-grouped phrases or sanitized talking points. She’s telling anyone who’ll listen that she wants to build “black socialism” in America.
Let that sink in for a moment. Not economic opportunity. Not pathways to prosperity. Socialism. The same failed system that’s left a trail of human misery across every continent it’s touched.
During a Friday interview with ELR News, Chevalier laid out her vision with the kind of enthusiasm most people reserve for announcing their engagement or a big promotion. She talked about working with the Democratic Socialists of America to build what she calls “black socialism” and “Latino socialism” within their caucuses. She wants to focus on racial justice as economic justice, which sounds nice until you remember that socialism doesn’t actually deliver justice of any kind. It delivers poverty, dependence, and the slow death of individual liberty.
You know what’s wild? She’s not an outlier anymore. House Speaker Mike Johnson has been sounding the alarm about this very trend. He’s watching insurgent left candidates win Democrat primaries across the country, and he’s not mincing words about what it means. Johnson recently pointed out what every student of history already knows: Karl Marx himself said socialism is just a stepping stone to communism. It’s not the destination. It’s the path that leads to the destruction of everything America stands for.
Johnson put it plainly when he explained that communism begins with the premise that there is no God, that the state becomes the god. That’s not compatible with a nation founded on the principle that our rights come from our Creator, not from government bureaucrats. The contrast couldn’t be sharper. We’re one nation under God, and they’re pushing a system that’s fundamentally atheistic and authoritarian at its core.
The history here isn’t debatable. Soviet Russia, Communist China, Venezuela, the Eastern Bloc. Every single experiment with socialism and communism has ended the same way: poverty, political violence, human suffering, and the crushing of human potential under the boot of state control. Yet here we are in 2024, watching Democrat candidates promise free stuff to young people who’ve never been taught why that promise always comes with chains attached.
Chevalier’s social media history tells you everything you need to know about where her loyalties lie. She’s hyped communism, Marxism, and Soviet figures in posts she’s since deleted. Funny how that works. Say what you believe, then scrub the evidence when someone points out how radical you really are. She recently claimed she was focused on the general election while traveling to Uruguay to meet with fellow leftists. Nothing says “I’m ready to represent American interests” quite like jetting off to South America for socialist solidarity meetings.
The really alarming part isn’t just one candidate in one race. More than half of Democrats now hold a more positive view of socialism than capitalism, according to recent polling from CBS News and YouGov. Think about that. The system that’s created more wealth, lifted more people out of poverty, and generated more human flourishing than any other in history is losing ground among Democrats to an ideology with a perfect track record of failure.
This isn’t about policy disagreements anymore. This is about the fundamental nature of America itself. Do we remain a nation built on individual liberty, free markets, and limited government? Or do we transform into something unrecognizable, where the state controls the means of production and decides who gets what based on political considerations rather than merit and hard work?
The barbarians aren’t at the gate. As Speaker Johnson said, they’re inside the gate. They’re running for Congress. They’re winning primaries. They’re openly advocating for systems that have killed millions and impoverished billions. And they’re doing it with a smile, wrapping their dangerous ideas in the language of justice and equity.
November can’t come fast enough. Americans need to understand what’s actually on the ballot. It’s not just about taxes or regulations or even specific policies. It’s about whether we’re going to preserve the American experiment or let it be dismantled by people who think Venezuela just didn’t do socialism correctly.
