Parents Deserve to Know What Their Kids Are Watching and Democrats Just Said No

FCC Chairman Brendan Carr just did something most government officials won’t do anymore. He told the truth, plainly and without apology, about what’s really happening with children’s television programming. And predictably, House Democrats are furious about it.

The fight started back in April when the FCC issued a public notice asking for feedback about the current television ratings system for kids’ programming. Nothing radical about that. Just a simple question: Should parents know when shows rated for young children include transgender and gender non-binary content? Seems reasonable. Most parents would probably want that information before their six-year-old settles in for Saturday morning cartoons.

But here’s where things got interesting. The Congressional Equality Caucus, led by over 60 House Democrats, fired back in June with accusations that the FCC was trying to “censor” transgender characters. They claimed the current ratings system works just fine, thank you very much, and that any attempt to inform parents about gender ideology content would be “harmful to transgender acceptance.” They even threw in First Amendment violations for good measure, because that’s what you do when you’re losing an argument on the merits.

Carr wasn’t having it. In a letter obtained by Fox News Digital and sent directly to Caucus Chair Rep. Mark Takano of California, the FCC chairman laid out exactly what’s wrong with the Democrats’ position. He called it what it is: radical. “You stake out the radical position that parents have no right to know whether controversial gender identity ideologies are being promoted in children’s television programming,” Carr wrote. No dancing around it. No diplomatic hedging.

Think about what the Democrats are actually arguing here. They’re saying that parents shouldn’t be informed about content that deals with complex questions of gender identity, even when that content is aimed at young children who still believe in the tooth fairy. They’re saying that transparency itself is somehow discriminatory. It’s an absurd position, and Carr called them out for it.

The whole situation reveals something deeper about where we are as a country. We’ve reached a point where simply informing parents about what their children are watching is considered controversial. Where asking questions about age-appropriate content gets you accused of censorship and bigotry. When did transparency become the enemy?

You know what’s really at stake here? Parental rights. The fundamental ability of mothers and fathers to make informed decisions about their own children’s upbringing. That used to be something both parties could agree on. Not anymore, apparently.

The Democrats’ letter accused the FCC of wanting to take us back to “a time when politicians sought to censor television programming because they included minorities.” That’s a deliberate conflation, and it’s intellectually dishonest. Nobody’s talking about censoring anything. We’re talking about labeling. Information. Giving parents the tools they need to parent effectively in a media environment that’s vastly different from what existed even ten years ago.

Carr pointed out that the Democrats are “coming out swinging against both transparency and common sense.” He’s right. There’s nothing hateful about wanting to know what ideas are being presented to your children. There’s nothing discriminatory about believing that parents, not television executives or government bureaucrats or activist groups, should be the primary influence on how young children think about complex social issues.

The timing of this fight matters too. Schools across the country are already dealing with lawsuits over similar issues. Parents in Washington state and elsewhere are suing districts for denying religious opt-outs from LGBTQ instruction. The frustration is building because parents feel shut out of decisions that directly affect their kids. The FCC’s proposal was a chance to give parents more control, not less.

What makes the Democrats’ position even more extreme is their claim that any rating change based on transgender content would violate the First Amendment. That’s a creative legal theory, to put it mildly. Television ratings have always been content-based. That’s literally their entire purpose. Violence gets flagged. Sexual content gets flagged. Strong language gets flagged. Why should gender ideology be the one topic that’s somehow immune from parental notification?

The answer, of course, is that Democrats don’t trust parents to come to the “right” conclusions if they’re fully informed. They’d rather keep things opaque, let the content flow freely to impressionable young minds, and call anyone who objects a bigot. It’s cynical, and Carr deserves credit for pushing back.

Parents aren’t asking for much here. Just honesty. Just information. Just the ability to make choices for their own families without being accused of discrimination. That used to be called freedom. Now it’s called radical. Welcome to 2025.
