Texas Democrat James Talarico Can’t Run From His Own Words on Parents and Gender

James Talarico wants Texas voters to believe he’s a moderate. He’s been working overtime to soften his image on gender issues, policing, and border security. The problem with political makeovers is that video doesn’t lie, and the internet never forgets.

A 2019 clip from the Texas Legislature shows the Democratic Senate candidate saying something that should alarm every parent in the Lone Star State. When discussing parents who don’t affirm their children’s gender identity, Talarico didn’t mince words. “I think there are some folks that would think that if you deny your child’s gender identity, that’s incredibly harmful. And whether or not we label it with the term abuse, it’s abusive for sure,” he said during a committee hearing.

Let that sink in. A man running for U.S. Senate once argued that parents exercising their judgment about their own children’s wellbeing could be engaging in abuse. Not neglect. Not endangerment. Abuse, simply for declining to go along with a child’s stated gender identity.

The context matters here. Talarico was speaking against HB 1910, a straightforward piece of legislation designed to protect parents from losing custody of their children merely because they refused to affirm a gender identity. The bill stated clearly that courts couldn’t consider a parent’s stance on gender identity when deciding custody arrangements. Pretty basic stuff when you think about the fundamental right of parents to raise their kids according to their values and beliefs.

But Talarico opposed it. He doubled down, actually. “Some of us I think really do consider this abusive behavior, an unwillingness to identify, acknowledge a child’s gender identity. We consider that abusive to the child, abusive and destructive,” he said. Notice the repetition of “abusive.” This wasn’t a slip of the tongue or poor word choice in the heat of debate. This was conviction.

You know what’s truly at stake here? The relationship between parents and children, one of the most sacred bonds in human society. For thousands of years, parents have guided their children through confusion, uncertainty, and the tumultuous journey of growing up. Now we have politicians suggesting that if you don’t immediately affirm every feeling or identity claim your child makes, you’re potentially committing abuse.

The Republican National Committee didn’t hold back. Zach Kraft, an RNC spokesperson, called Talarico’s focus on children’s gender issues disturbing and accused him of “pushing sex changes on other people’s kids.” Strong language, sure, but is it unfair given Talarico’s record?

That initial version of HB 1910 died in committee. But Texas lawmakers recognized the importance of protecting parental rights and passed a stronger version in May 2025. It became law. Talarico was one of only 59 legislators who voted against it. He also supported an amendment to sunset the law in 2030, essentially trying to put an expiration date on parental protections.

This isn’t about compassion or protecting vulnerable kids, despite how Talarico frames it. This is about who gets to make decisions for children. Parents who love their kids and know them better than any government official ever could? Or activists and politicians who think they know better than moms and dads?

The broader conservative movement has been sounding the alarm on this issue for years. We’ve watched as schools hide information from parents about their children’s social transitions. We’ve seen custody battles where judges consider a parent’s refusal to affirm a gender identity as evidence against them. This isn’t hypothetical anymore. It’s happening in courtrooms and school districts across America.

Talarico’s resurfaced comments reveal something crucial about his campaign. The moderate mask he’s wearing for Texas voters doesn’t fit right. It keeps slipping, exposing the progressive ideology underneath. He’s not alone in this strategy. Democrats nationwide have realized that their positions on gender, crime, and immigration play well in deep blue districts but crash and burn in competitive states.

Texas has been leaning Republican for good reason. Texans value freedom, including the freedom to raise their children according to their own moral compass and judgment. They don’t want Sacramento politics imported to Austin. They certainly don’t want politicians threatening to label them abusive for being traditional parents.

The timing of this video’s resurfacing matters too. Voters deserve to know who they’re actually electing, not the focus-grouped version that emerges during campaign season. Character isn’t what you say when you’re running for higher office. It’s what you said when you thought nobody outside your political bubble was paying attention.

Talarico has already acknowledged he “missed the mark” on some previous statements. That’s politician speak for “I said what I believed, but now it’s hurting me in the polls.” Real leadership means standing by your principles even when they’re unpopular. Flip-flopping means you never had principles to begin with, just positions.
