Antifa Sympathizer Arrested for Campaign Sign Theft Shows What the Left Really Thinks About Democracy

Josef Marris thought he was fighting fascism. Instead, he’s facing criminal charges and a pink slip after allegedly stealing campaign signs from Anthony Constantino, a Republican running for New York’s 21st Congressional District seat. The Essex County Sheriff’s Office charged him with two counts of criminal possession of stolen property. His employer, East Branch Organics, promptly fired him.

Here’s what makes this story worth your attention. This wasn’t some kid pulling a prank or a disgruntled neighbor settling a personal beef. Marris, according to social media posts reviewed by Fox News Digital, describes himself as a communist and an Antifa supporter. In April 2023, he posted the three-arrow symbol that’s been tied to various socialist and anti-fascist movements over the years. The symbolism matters because it reveals motivation, and motivation reveals character.

Constantino’s campaign claims they’ve lost more than a hundred thousand dollars to sign theft and vandalism. Let that sink in for a moment. A hundred thousand dollars. That’s not politics as usual. That’s organized intimidation dressed up as activism, and the media keeps treating it like both sides are equally guilty of these shenanigans.

You know what frustrates me most about stories like this? The reflexive both-sides narrative that journalists trot out whenever the left gets caught doing something indefensible. Constantino said it plainly when he told Fox Digital that the media needs to stop pretending this is a both-sides problem. He’s right. Show me the conservative activists systematically destroying Democratic campaign materials to the tune of six figures. I’ll wait.

The Constantino campaign alleges that Marris was acting on behalf of Democratic candidate Blake Gendebien, who currently leads in the race to replace retiring Rep. Elise Stefanik. Gendebien’s campaign hasn’t responded to requests for comment, which tells you everything you need to know about their willingness to disavow this behavior. Silence is a choice, and in politics, it’s often the most revealing one.

Constantino didn’t mince words on X, writing that Gendebien “is surrounded by FAR LEFT EXTREMISTS.” Strong language? Maybe. But when someone who publicly embraces communist ideology and Antifa symbolism is allegedly stealing your campaign signs while driving his employer’s vehicle, the description seems pretty measured actually.

The thing about political violence is that it rarely starts with baseball bats and pipe bombs. It starts with the normalization of smaller violations. Stealing signs. Vandalizing property. Intimidating supporters. These actions send a message that your political opponents don’t deserve the same rights and protections you claim for yourself. That’s not democracy. That’s tyranny with better branding.

We’re watching a generation of young people convinced that their moral certainty justifies any action, no matter how illegal or authoritarian. Dave Rubin recently discussed statistics showing that college students increasingly support using violence to stop controversial speakers. This mindset doesn’t stay confined to campus. It metastasizes into the broader culture, where self-described revolutionaries think nothing of crushing dissent in the name of fighting fascism.

The irony would be hilarious if it weren’t so dangerous. These are people who claim to oppose authoritarianism while practicing it with enthusiasm.
