Rep. James Gallagher isn’t mincing words anymore. The California Republican just sent FBI Director Kash Patel a letter that should make every American sit up and pay attention, because what’s happening in Northern California isn’t just about illegal marijuana. It’s about foreign criminal networks exploiting our porous enforcement system while Democrats in Sacramento pretend everything’s fine.
The numbers coming out of Siskiyou County tell a story that ought to alarm anyone who cares about sovereignty and rule of law. We’re talking about 7,000 illegal growers in the Mount Shasta Vista subdivision alone. Not hundreds. Thousands. The county sheriff’s office eradicated 332,871 illegal marijuana plants this year and seized 54,070 pounds of processed marijuana. These aren’t mom-and-pop operations hidden in someone’s basement.
Here’s what really gets under your skin. Entire rural properties now look like industrial farming complexes, covered wall to wall with makeshift plastic greenhouses called hoop houses. They’re sucking groundwater out of wells faster than nature can replenish it, leaving local ranchers and farmers watching their own wells run dry. You know what that means for a rural community? It means livelihoods destroyed, multi-generational farms going under, and families who’ve worked the land for decades suddenly competing with criminal enterprises for the most basic resource they need to survive.
The Chinese connection isn’t speculation. Gallagher pointed to a 2018 federal investigation that traced an illegal marijuana operation directly back to money from China. That investigation led to forfeiture actions on more than 100 properties in the Sacramento area. Think about that scale for a moment. We’re not talking about a few bad actors. We’re talking about organized criminal networks with the capital and sophistication to purchase and operate hundreds of properties simultaneously.
And here’s where it gets even murkier. Investigators in Siskiyou County have traced cultivation properties to individuals who don’t even live in the county. The people actually managing the grows often have no apparent ownership interest in the land. It’s a shell game designed to obscure who’s really pulling the strings and financing these operations. When you see that kind of deliberate obfuscation, you’re looking at organized crime tradecraft.
The environmental damage adds insult to injury. These operations use highly toxic pesticides that contaminate soil and groundwater. They don’t care about EPA regulations or community health because they’re not planning to stick around. They extract what they want and move on, leaving poisoned land behind for American families to deal with.
California legalized marijuana with all kinds of promises about eliminating the black market and creating a regulated, taxable industry. How’s that working out? The black market didn’t disappear. It exploded. Legalization just gave it cover and a marketing department. Meanwhile, the state’s criminal justice reforms have watered down enforcement to the point where local sheriffs are practically begging for federal help.
This is what happens when ideology trumps common sense. Democrats in Sacramento keep pushing policies that sound compassionate but create enforcement vacuums that organized crime rushes to fill. They’ve decriminalized theft, weakened penalties for drug offenses, and generally sent the message that California isn’t serious about enforcing the law. Foreign criminal syndicates got that message loud and clear.
The illegal immigrant labor component deserves its own conversation. These grow operations rely on workers who are often trafficked or coerced, living in terrible conditions with no legal recourse. It’s modern indentured servitude happening in American forests and rural subdivisions, and the same politicians who claim to care about immigrant rights look the other way because acknowledging it would require admitting their policies failed.
Gallagher’s letter to the FBI is a desperate plea for federal intervention because state government has abdicated responsibility. When you’ve got illegal cultivation spreading onto federal lands like the Shasta-Trinity National Forest, you’re not just dealing with a state problem anymore. You’re dealing with a national security issue involving foreign criminal networks operating with apparent impunity on American soil.
The broader question nobody in Sacramento wants to answer is this: how many other industries and regions are experiencing similar foreign infiltration while state officials practice willful blindness? If Chinese organized crime can establish this kind of foothold in Northern California’s marijuana industry, what’s stopping them from doing the same elsewhere?
Limited government doesn’t mean toothless government. It means government focused on its core responsibilities, and protecting citizens from foreign criminal enterprises ranks pretty high on that list. What’s happening in Siskiyou County is a test case for whether America still has the will to defend its own territory and protect its own people. Right now, we’re failing that test in spectacular fashion.
