Federal Judge Faces Misconduct Complaint for Sanctioning Trump Attorneys in Dismissed IRS Case

Here’s what should concern every American who values fair play in our judicial system. A federal judge just sanctioned lawyers representing President Trump in a case that no longer existed. Read that again. The case was already dismissed, voluntarily, by the people who filed it. And yet Judge Kathleen Williams, an Obama appointee sitting in Florida’s Southern District, decided she had unfinished business.

Jim Jordan isn’t having it. The House Judiciary Committee chairman fired off a misconduct complaint that pulls no punches. He’s calling out what he sees as a brazen abuse of judicial authority, and honestly, the timeline here is hard to ignore. When a judge waits until after parties settle their differences and walk away, then swoops in to punish the lawyers involved, something smells off.

The backstory matters. Back in 2026, Trump and his sons sued the IRS for ten billion dollars after a contractor named Charles Littlejohn leaked the president’s tax returns to the media. Littlejohn got five years in prison for that stunt, by the way. The case moved forward until May, when Trump voluntarily dismissed it. Then came the settlement announcement. The administration set up a $1.776 billion fund for victims of what they’re calling Biden-era lawfare. Trump himself got no money, just an apology and protection from future IRS audits of him and his family.

You know what happened next? Judge Williams essentially accused everyone involved of playing games with her courtroom. She sanctioned two of Trump’s attorneys, referring one to the Florida Bar for potential discipline and banning the other from practicing in her jurisdiction for a year. The judge’s reasoning was that the plaintiffs manipulated the courts to achieve their settlement. But here’s the kicker. She did this after the case was done. After both sides agreed to walk away.

Jordan’s letter points out something that should raise eyebrows across the political spectrum. Williams appears to have based her decision on an amicus brief from Democracy Defenders Action, a left-wing group that rallied 35 former federal judges to cry fraud. These weren’t parties to the case. They were activists asking the judge to reopen something that the actual litigants had already resolved. And she apparently listened.

Think about the implications. If judges can punish lawyers for cases that no longer exist, based on complaints from outside groups with obvious political agendas, we’re not talking about justice anymore. We’re talking about something else entirely. Something that looks a lot like the weaponization Trump’s settlement fund was designed to address.

Darrell Issa is co-leading this complaint, which gives it bipartisan weight within Republican circles. The Judicial Conference of the United States now has to decide whether Williams crossed a line. Did she abuse her authority? Did she violate judicial impartiality? Those aren’t small questions. They cut to the heart of whether Americans can trust the courts to stay out of politics.

The timing really is suspect. Williams sat on her hands until after the settlement was announced, then dropped her sanctions order in July. That’s not normal judicial procedure. That’s an activist judge making a statement. And when judges start making statements instead of following the law, everybody loses. Not just Trump. Not just Republicans. Everybody who might someday need a fair shake in federal court.

This case will test whether our judicial oversight systems actually work. Jordan and Issa are betting they do. Williams might discover that judges, like everyone else, have to answer for their decisions when those decisions look more political than legal.
