Federal Personnel Exchange Gunfire with Attackers Across Rio Grande in Texas

Let’s get the facts straight here. Coast Guard personnel came under fire from the Mexican side of the border while conducting operations to intercept illegal border crossers, and they did what any rational person would expect them to do: they returned fire.

The incident occurred on September 26 near Garceno, a small town in Starr County, Texas, along the Rio Grande. Coast Guard personnel were working alongside other federal agencies to intercept migrants illegally crossing the river when gunshots rang out from Mexican territory. The Coast Guard returned fire. No American personnel were injured, and no equipment was damaged.

This is not normal. This is not acceptable. And this is precisely why the federal government has now repositioned hundreds of troops and military equipment to the Rio Grande Valley.

The Coast Guard has launched Operation River Wall, deploying additional personnel, boats, and assets to patrol approximately 260 miles of the Rio Grande. The operation represents a coordinated effort with Border Patrol, the Pentagon, and the Texas Military Department to secure the border and disrupt criminal activity.

Here is what matters: the Coast Guard is now investigating the incident alongside federal partners. It remains unclear who fired the initial shots, though the fact that American personnel were targeted while performing their lawful duties should concern every American who believes in the rule of law.

U.S. Ambassador to Mexico Ronald Johnson confirmed that the embassy is coordinating with Mexican forces being deployed to the border area where the shots were fired. He stated that Mexican military commanders will communicate directly with deployed American forces, and that both nations intend to patrol their respective sides of the shared border to protect communities and disrupt criminal and terrorist organizations.

“Any threat from criminal or terrorist elements on either side of the border will be addressed swiftly,” Johnson said. That is the correct response.

Mexico has deployed 500 Army and National Guard personnel to its side of the border. This deployment came after the Coast Guard came under fire, suggesting Mexican authorities recognize the severity of the situation.

The Coast Guard has made clear its mission: “to control, secure and defend the border that strengthens our collective ability to counter illicit activity and safeguard our personnel and the communities we serve.” The agency is utilizing what it describes as a “layered, integrated approach” to border security.

This incident underscores a fundamental truth that bears repeating: America’s southern border remains dangerously unsecured, and federal personnel tasked with protecting it face real threats. When Coast Guard personnel come under fire while performing their duties on American soil, it demonstrates the breakdown of border security that has plagued this region for years.

The fact that this incident occurred while federal agencies were conducting joint operations to intercept illegal border crossers reveals the dangerous environment created by inadequate border security. Criminal organizations operating along the border have grown increasingly bold, and American personnel are now exchanging gunfire with hostile actors across the Rio Grande.

The deployment of hundreds of additional American troops and equipment to Texas represents a necessary response to escalating threats. The question is whether this response will prove sufficient to restore order and security to the border region.
