Ilhan Omar Lawyers Up With Biden’s Attorney as Feds Close In on Immigration Fraud Allegations

You can tell everything you need to know about a legal defense by looking at who’s doing the defending. When federal agents raided Rep. Ilhan Omar’s Washington home last month, seizing her phone, passport, computers, and notebooks, she didn’t call an immigration attorney. She called the Democratic Party’s cleanup crew.

Omar hired Amy Jeffress and Joshua Matz from Hecker Fink, two lawyers whose resumes read like a greatest hits album of anti-Trump legal warfare. Jeffress became Joe Biden’s personal attorney just this year. Before that? She represented Lisa Page, the FBI lawyer whose pillow talk with Peter Strzok about stopping Trump became a national scandal. She also did outside work for the January 6 committee. Matz, meanwhile, was counsel to the House Judiciary Committee during both Trump impeachments and has spent recent months defending Ivy League universities against the current administration.

Notice what’s missing here. Neither of these attorneys specializes in immigration law. They’re constitutional litigators who handle government investigations and political warfare. That tells you something about Omar’s strategy. This isn’t about proving innocence on the merits. It’s about framing the investigation as political persecution.

The actual allegations are serious and straightforward. Homeland Security Investigations wants to know if Omar or her late father lied about her age on naturalization paperwork. They’re also examining whether her 2009 marriage to Ahmed Nur Said Elmi was fraudulent, possibly even a marriage to her own brother. A Justice Department filing from the search lists her as “Ilhan Nur Said Elmi, a/k/a Ilhan Abdullahi Omar” with no explanation offered. That’s not nothing.

Four days after the October 12 raid, Jeffress and Matz fired off a letter to the Justice Department demanding the return of everything seized. The letter didn’t focus on the substance of the investigation. Instead, it called the probe “vindictive, retributive, and politically motivated” and claimed it violates Omar’s constitutional rights and threatens the separation of powers. It’s the kind of aggressive posturing you’d expect from lawyers trained in impeachment battles, not immigration cases.

Here’s what makes this whole situation even more interesting. Omar posted a video on TikTok this week asking supporters to chip in for her legal defense, saying it’s going to be “a very expensive and challenging time.” But according to her campaign filings as of October 15, she hasn’t paid Hecker Fink or either lawyer a dime. So who’s footing the bill? The silence on that question is deafening.

President Trump called for Omar’s immediate resignation on Thursday. Border czar Tom Homan went further, saying she could face denaturalization and deportation if fraud is proven. Omar denies any wrongdoing, naturally. But when a sitting member of Congress needs to hire impeachment lawyers for an immigration investigation and then goes begging on social media for money, something doesn’t add up.

The core question isn’t complicated. Did Omar or her father lie on official documents to gain entry or citizenship? If they did, that’s fraud. It doesn’t matter if you’re a bartender in Queens or a congresswoman from Minnesota. The law applies the same way to everyone, or at least it’s supposed to.

What bothers people isn’t just the allegations themselves. It’s the playbook being deployed in response. Hire partisan lawyers. Claim persecution. Fundraise off the controversy. Attack the legitimacy of the investigation instead of addressing the underlying facts. It’s exhausting, honestly. And it’s exactly the kind of behavior that erodes whatever trust remains in our institutions.

Immigration fraud isn’t a minor paperwork error. It’s a fundamental betrayal of the system that welcomed someone to this country. If Omar committed fraud to get here, she doesn’t deserve to stay, let alone serve in Congress. That’s not vindictive. That’s just the law doing what it’s designed to do.
