Matt Gaetz Faces Sex Trafficking Lawsuit After Ethics Report Detailed Statutory Rape Evidence

Matt Gaetz can’t seem to escape his past, and frankly, that’s exactly how it should be when serious allegations keep piling up like unpaid parking tickets. The disgraced former Florida congressman now faces a federal civil lawsuit accusing him of participating in a sex trafficking scheme. Two plaintiffs identified as Jane Doe 1 and Jane Doe 2 filed the complaint in the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Florida, naming Gaetz alongside former state Rep. Chris Dorworth and convicted felon Joel Greenberg.

The lawsuit is seeking a jury trial. That means ordinary Americans will eventually hear the evidence and decide what they think happened. It’s a far cry from the carefully managed political theater we’ve grown accustomed to in Washington.

Gaetz, true to form, came out swinging. “I look forward to taking the plaintiffs’ depositions because much of the conduct alleged against me is false,” he said in a statement. He complained that the lawsuit relies heavily on a Congressional Committee report that didn’t let him confront his accusers. Now he’ll get his chance, he says, as if this is some kind of victory lap waiting to happen.

But here’s the thing. The House Ethics Committee already did its homework, and what they found wasn’t pretty. The committee concluded it had evidence that Gaetz violated statutory rape laws and paid multiple women for sex between 2017 and 2020. We’re talking about a sitting member of Congress allegedly engaging in behavior that would land any regular person in prison without a second thought.

The investigation centered on a girl who was just 17 years old at the time. She was homeless. She needed money for braces. Let that sink in for a moment. While Gaetz was crafting legislation and appearing on cable news defending conservative values, he allegedly had sex with a high school junior twice at a party, once reportedly on a pool table or air hockey table. The party was at Dorworth’s home back in July 2017.

The girl met Greenberg first through a sugar dating website after lying about her age to get on the platform. Greenberg, who’s now serving more than a decade in prison for underage sex trafficking and other crimes, introduced her to Gaetz’s social circle. Under Florida law, sexual activity between someone 24 or older and a 16 or 17 year old is a felony. Gaetz was 35 at the time.

The Ethics Committee report also alleged that Gaetz used cocaine and ecstasy on multiple occasions. So much for the law and order platform he championed during his tenure in Congress. You know what’s remarkable? The sheer audacity of it all. This wasn’t some youthful indiscretion from decades ago. This allegedly happened while he was an elected representative entrusted with making laws for the rest of us.

Gaetz has consistently denied having sex with the minor. He previously told the New York Times that the woman threatened to sue him unless he paid her $2.3 million. “She never sued me because her story is fiction,” he insisted. Well, she’s suing him now, along with another plaintiff. So either his prediction was wrong or circumstances have changed.

The Justice Department declined to prosecute Gaetz criminally, which raises its own set of questions about prosecutorial discretion and what standard of evidence they demand. But a civil lawsuit operates under different rules. The burden of proof is lower. It’s preponderance of evidence, not beyond reasonable doubt. That matters.

This lawsuit arrives after years of scrutiny surrounding Gaetz’s alleged sexual misconduct. He resigned from Congress in November 2024 right after President Trump nominated him for attorney general. That nomination crashed and burned spectacularly when he couldn’t secure enough support from his own party. His resignation came just days before the Ethics Committee was scheduled to vote on releasing its findings. Convenient timing, wouldn’t you say?

The whole saga reveals something rotten about how power operates in Washington. Gaetz managed to dodge criminal prosecution despite an Ethics Committee finding evidence of statutory rape. He nearly became the nation’s top law enforcement official. That should terrify anyone who believes in accountability and the rule of law. Limited government means nothing if the people running that government think they’re above the very laws they create.

This case will test whether our justice system actually works for everyone or just the connected and powerful. The plaintiffs are demanding their day in court. Gaetz says he welcomes the opportunity to defend himself. Fine. Let’s see what a jury decides when they hear all the evidence under oath.
