Trump Ambassador Allegedly Sold Government Access for Personal Debt Payment

Let’s talk about something that should make every American’s blood boil. Kimberly Guilfoyle, now serving as our ambassador to Greece, allegedly asked a Trump donor to pay off her $100,000 credit card bill in exchange for access to top administration officials. You read that right. A hundred thousand dollars on a credit card, and she wanted someone else to foot the bill as the price of admission to powerful people.

Eric Deters, a conservative media figure and Trump donor from Kentucky, went public with text messages he claims show Guilfoyle begging him for the money just days before her Senate confirmation hearing last July. “Honey please I need you to get this done for me today,” one message allegedly reads. That’s not exactly subtle. Deters says the quid pro quo was crystal clear. Pay the bill, get access to the right people in the Trump administration.

Now, Guilfoyle’s attorney disputes the messages are authentic but won’t say specifically what’s wrong with them. That’s convenient. The lawyer also floated the idea that maybe this was reimbursement for travel and speaking expenses. Deters says he doesn’t owe her a dime. So either someone’s lying or there’s been a spectacular misunderstanding involving six figures.

Here’s what really grinds my gears about this whole mess. We conservatives ran on draining the swamp. We campaigned against the corrupt Washington insiders who treated government service like a personal ATM and sold access like it was merchandise at a yard sale. The entire appeal of Trump’s movement was supposed to be that we were different. We valued merit over connections, results over relationships, and serving the people over serving ourselves.

If these allegations are true, this isn’t conservatism. This is exactly the kind of behavior we spent years condemning when Democrats did it. The Clinton Foundation perfected this game. Pay for play dressed up in nice clothes and diplomatic language. We rightfully called it out as corruption then. We can’t suddenly develop amnesia now because someone on our team got caught doing the same dance.

Deters himself is hardly a choir boy. His law license got suspended back in 2012, and Kentucky’s Supreme Court said he had a “notorious propensity” for filing frivolous lawsuits when they refused to reinstate him in 2021. He’s lost two political races. Some folks will say this makes him unreliable. Maybe. But you know what? Sometimes the messenger is flawed and the message is still true.

The specific favor Deters wanted makes this story even stranger. He says he separately offered Guilfoyle money to help extradite an Ohio doctor who fled to Pakistan. That’s not asking for help getting a permit approved faster or making an introduction at a fundraiser. That’s asking an ambassador to intervene in an international criminal matter for cash.

Vice President JD Vance got asked about this situation at an event Thursday. He said he disapproves of people selling access to government officials but claimed he didn’t know the specifics. That’s the safe political answer. What we need is the honest answer. Either this happened or it didn’t. Either we tolerate this behavior or we don’t.

Individual liberty means nothing if government officials can auction off their influence. Limited government becomes a joke when public servants treat their positions as profit centers. Free market capitalism doesn’t mean selling government access to the highest bidder. That’s cronyism wearing capitalism’s clothes.

We’ve got to be consistent here. The principles matter more than the personalities. If Guilfoyle did what Deters alleges, she should resign. Not because she’s Republican or because she’s connected to the Trump family through her past engagement to Don Jr. She should resign because this is exactly the swamp behavior we promised to end. Our credibility depends on holding our own people to the same standards we demand from everyone else.
