When Rep. Ilhan Omar resurfaced after federal agents raided her DC home, she didn’t hold a press conference at the state capitol. She didn’t meet with mainstream Minnesota constituents. She went to the Karmel Mall of Somalia in Minneapolis, and that choice tells you everything you need to know about who she really represents.

Digital reporters got an exclusive tour of this massive complex, and what they found should concern every American who believes immigration means becoming American, not simply relocating your home country to our soil. This isn’t a melting pot. It’s Somalia with American electricity and plumbing.

The mall’s owner, Basim Sabri, a Gaza-born real estate mogul with his fingers in local politics, claims it’s the largest Somali mall in the world. Think about that for a second. The largest Somali mall isn’t in Mogadishu. It’s in Minnesota. He gave conflicting numbers about how many stores occupy the space, first saying 900, then 750. When you can’t keep track of your own inventory, maybe your empire grew too fast.

Inside, English takes a back seat. The primary language is Somali. The stores sell SIM cards for overseas calls, foreign currency exchanges, and travel agencies booking trips to the Middle East and East Africa. There’s gold, traditional Somali fashion, henna tattoo shops, and cafes serving Somali food. A giant Somali flag dominates the food court ceiling. Somali, Palestinian, and American flags hang on the walls, and you better believe the Stars and Stripes comes last in that hierarchy.

This is where politicians come to court votes, Sabri explained. It’s a community hub, he said. An incubator for mostly female entrepreneurs. That sounds nice until you realize what’s actually being incubated here is a parallel society that has zero interest in joining the broader American community.

The mall even runs an Islamic weekend school where children learn the Quran and participate in recreational activities. Nothing wrong with religious education in principle, but when your entire commercial and social ecosystem operates in a foreign language with foreign cultural norms, you’re not building Americans. You’re building permanent foreigners who happen to have citizenship papers.

Security initially blocked Digital reporters from filming without Sabri’s permission. The owner banned Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey from the premises back in February 2024 after Frey vetoed a city council resolution calling for an Israel-Gaza ceasefire. So much for the inclusive, diverse community we’re always hearing about. Agree with us or get out seems to be the actual policy.

Few non-Somalis were present during the tour. This isn’t a place where cultures mix and people learn from each other. It’s an enclave, pure and simple.

We’ve been told for decades that diversity is our strength, that immigration enriches America, that multiculturalism makes us better. But what’s happening in Minneapolis isn’t multiculturalism. It’s segregation with government approval. These folks aren’t joining American society. They’re recreating the society they left, complete with the tribal politics, the foreign allegiances, and the hostile rejection of anyone who questions their agenda.

The traditional American approach to immigration required something from newcomers. Learn English. Adopt our civic values. Respect our institutions. Become American while keeping your heritage as a private enrichment, not a public barrier. That’s not what’s happening here. The Karmel Mall represents the exact opposite philosophy, one where America provides the economic opportunity and physical safety while immigrants maintain complete cultural and political separation.

Omar eating lunch with state Attorney General Keith Ellison in that food court under the Somali flag tells you where her true loyalty lies. It’s not with the American citizens of Minnesota’s fifth district. It’s with this insular community that sees America as a host to exploit, not a home to honor.

Limited government means local communities should manage their own affairs, absolutely. But it doesn’t mean surrendering American identity in American cities. It doesn’t mean allowing foreign enclaves to operate as parallel governments with their own rules, languages, and allegiances.

The federal raid on Omar’s home happened for reasons we’ll eventually learn. Her immediate retreat to this Somali fortress speaks volumes about who she thinks will protect her. Not her fellow Americans. Her fellow Somalis. That’s not representation. That’s tribalism with a congressional pin.
