Rice University student, who was shot dead in an apparent murder/suicide on the first day at the Houston elite school.

Andrea Rodriguez Avila was 21 years old and a junior in political science. She had just transferred from the Community College of Baltimore County to Rice University. She had recently transferred from Community College of Baltimore County to Rice University in spring 2024.

Avila is a highly accomplished student. She was the deputy parliamentarian for the Rice Student Association and the peer academic advisor in her residence hall, Jones College. Avila also served on the Honor Council of the University.

A spokesperson from the university confirmed Avila’s parents arrived in Houston Tuesday morning, one day after the tragedy.

The leadership team of the university is providing support to [Avila’s] family during this difficult time. The family has requested privacy to mourn but is deeply grateful for the thoughts and prayers of the community.

Avila was discovered dead in her room by university police Monday during a welfare check. Families were concerned that they couldn’t reach her.

Police said that a man who was not an undergraduate student was also found dead with a gunshot wound that appeared to have been self-inflicted.

Houston Police has not released the name of the suspect shooter, but they have said that he is believed to be a 22-year-old man from Florida. His identity will be released after the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences verifies it.

Clemente Rodrguez, Rice University Police Chief, confirmed that Avila was in a relationship with the man.

Police said that a note found at the scene indicated the two were in a “troubled” relationship.

This incident rocked Rice University during what was supposed to be an exciting first semester of the fall.

Rice University President Reginald DesRoches stated that the campus was “shaken to its very core” in a day that should have been full of “promises and new beginnings.”

“The pain that we feel tonight on campus is incomparable, and I realize that words can’t fully express the sorrow and grief of many of you.” “I urge you to support each other and show compassion. Remember that we’re all in this together.” DesRoches wrote on the school website.

The school was closed on Tuesday.

The Rice School has about 8,500 students. The tuition is around $60,000 per year.
