The Trump administration has officially designated four European Antifa cells as terrorist organizations, extending its September classification of the American branch of the far-left network as a domestic terror group to the international stage.
The State Department announced this week that as of November 20th, radical leftist Antifa groups operating in Germany, Greece, and Italy will face terrorist designations as part of what the administration describes as its “commitment to confront Antifa’s campaign of political violence.”
The facts here are straightforward. These are not peaceful protest organizations. These are violent criminal enterprises engaged in systematic political intimidation.
Chief among the designated groups is the German-based Antifa Ost, also known as Antifa East or the “Hammer Gang.” According to the State Department, this organization has conducted numerous attacks against individuals it labels as “fascists” or members of the “right-wing scene” in Germany between 2018 and 2023. The group stands accused of orchestrating a series of violent assaults in Budapest in mid-February 2023.
The designation carries serious consequences. Members of these organizations are now barred from entering the United States. Their assets are subject to freezing and seizure. American citizens and businesses are prohibited from conducting any transactions with them. These are the standard tools employed against terrorist organizations, and rightfully so.
Notably, Washington did not consult Berlin before implementing these designations. This is the correct approach. American security policy should not require European approval, particularly when European governments have demonstrated reluctance to confront left-wing political violence with the same vigor they apply to right-wing extremism.
The case of Ilaria Salis perfectly illustrates the problem. Salis, an alleged member involved in the Budapest attacks, was held under house arrest in Hungary. She was subsequently released after winning election to the European Parliament representing Italy, which granted her immunity from prosecution. This is absurd on its face. European institutions are literally shielding alleged terrorists from justice.
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, responding to this incident, classified Antifa as a terrorist group in Hungary. At least some European leaders recognize reality.
German prosecutors in Düsseldorf have charged six suspected members of Antifa East with membership in a criminal organization, aggravated assault, and attempted murder related to the Budapest attack. Seven additional members currently face trial in Dresden, including charges of attempted murder.
The violence continues unabated. Earlier this month, an Antifa cell in Germany firebombed the car of the leader of the Alternative for Germany parliamentary group in the Bundestag. Their justification? The upcoming trials of their comrades. This is textbook terrorism: violence designed to intimidate political opponents and influence legal proceedings.
The pattern is clear and disturbing. These organizations operate with relative impunity across Europe, attacking political opponents, destroying property, and threatening anyone they arbitrarily label as “fascist.” European authorities have largely treated these groups with kid gloves, often more concerned with right-wing extremism while downplaying left-wing political violence.
The Trump administration’s decision to designate these groups as terrorist organizations is both overdue and entirely justified. When organizations employ systematic violence to achieve political objectives, they are terrorists. The ideology motivating that violence is irrelevant. Left-wing terrorism is still terrorism.
The question now is whether European governments will follow America’s lead or continue enabling these violent extremists through selective prosecution and institutional protection. Based on the Salis case, the answer remains unclear.
What is clear is that the United States will no longer treat Antifa violence as mere protest or civil disobedience. It is terrorism, and it will be confronted as such.
