When GOP Sen. Rick Scott recently called to ask President Biden for information about a Cuban human rights activist being tortured by communist regimes, the White House ignored him. Scott posted about his frustration with the Biden administration and criticized the White House for its “shameful cowardice” by not linking the U.S. senator to the president on the issue of human rights.
Scott tweeted that the White House just hang up on him when he called to speak to someone about Jose Daniel Ferrer’s torture and abuse as a prisoner under the illegitimate communist Cuban government. The Florida senator said that this isn’t just weakness, but shameful cowardice. He said he will not tolerate it.
Jose Daniel Ferrer is the leader of UNPACU (Patriotic Union of Cuba), which is one of the most prominent opposition groups to the Cuban government. Ferrer’s house arrest privileges were revoked a few months ago by the Communist government, which forced him to serve 4 years of imprisonment for kidnapping as well as assault charges. The Cuban government charged Ferrer with being a counterrevolutionary, but he claimed that he was not arrested because of his political views.
It was reported Ferrer said he wouldn’t comply with his house arrest condition to not participate in political activism. Scott’s spokesperson confirmed that Scott called Biden Wednesday to ask for his assistance, which was his second phone call this week to discuss Ferrer’s torture and detention by the Communist Cuban government.
According to the spokesperson, the senator’s first call was received with a voicemail request and his latest call ended in a disconnection.
