President Joe Biden plans a dramatic speech about voting rights in Georgia Tuesday. He will be focusing on newly passed laws regarding election integrity in Georgia. According to a Politico preview, the president will use the issue about voting rights to demand reform of Senate filibuster rules.
“We are doubling it down, kicking that into another gear. We are going right to ground zero for voter suppression, voter under version, and obstruction,” Cedric Richmond, White House Director of the Office of Public Engagement, told Politico.
Biden’s speech will echo his condemnation of the January 6 protests and focus his anger on former President Donald Trump, Republicans.
Biden will denounce the Georgia Republican-passed election law reforms, which were signed by Governor. Brian Kemp, who was elected in March by the Republicans of Georgia, was branded racist and a further example of Trump’s danger to democracy.
Georgia’s reforms include voter ID requirements, a reduction in the number of drop boxes, and a ban on officials sending absentee ballot applications to all voters.
Democrats protested the new rules in a storm of activism that led to Major League Baseball canceling the all-star game in Atlanta. The boycott cost the city $100 million and harmed minority-owned businesses.
