Law Enforcement Skeptical Of Biden’s Ill-timed Pivot To Execute Orders On Police Reform

Law enforcement organizations expressed concern about Biden’s plan to use executive orders to reform the police force. They said it was “not sustainable” and an attempt to distract attention from the week of defeats. According to NBC News, the executive actions are still being finalized. However, they are expected to be rolled out at the beginning of Black History Month in February, as the administration tries to achieve policy goals that will lead up to the President’s State of the Union address.

After Floyd’s death by a Minneapolis police officer, the House of Representatives passed the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act on party lines in March 2021. After months of negotiations between a bipartisan group, senators failed to reach a bill for police reform, the White House will likely turn to the executive powers of President Obama to implement sweeping police reform.

Biden is also being criticized for his support of police reform following major losses on the OSHA vaccine mandate and the filibuster.

The Supreme Court rebuffed Biden’s attempt to make employers in the United States with more than 100 employees vaccinate. Voting rights reform was stalled in Senate after Democrats blocked a push for the suspension of the filibuster.

Smith said that Joe Biden had plans to turn to “police reform” after the worst week of his presidency. This was to help his reputation and regain his popularity among ‘anti-police activists.” Smith called it “ill-timed”, as both the number of police officers killed has risen as well as violent crime.

The White House should prioritize protecting ALL communities and not allowing a militant wing or activists to believe that police officer are the problem. The National Police Association urges the President and his staff use the facts about crime in America, as well as a police force, and to stop using false rhetoric to denigrate our profession.
