Rep. Jim Jordan (R.OH) stated on Friday’s SiriusXM’s Breitbart News Daily that the Journalism Competition and Preservation Act, if enacted, would create a cartel between “big government”, Big Tech and big media to censor and suppress news media outlets like Breitbart News.
Jordan stated that “Big media will team up with Big Tech and they’re going after conservative outlets getting truth out there, such as you guys.” It is that simple.
Proponents of the JCPA describe the bill’s purpose as to increase the financial viability of smaller news media outlets, while decreasing revenues in the journalism industry because of modern digital sharing.
Jordan stated that the JCPA would allow leftist news media outlets as well as large technology companies to decide the parameters of entry into what the bill calls a “joint negotiations entity.” He said such media and technology companies would conspire against Breitbart News, and other outlets that are not aligned with their political and ideological consensus.
Jordan observed, “The cartel which forms gets to determine and define the terms of who gets in.” Are you sure that Google, Washington Post, and New York Times will want Breitbart [included]?
Jordan connected the push for JCPA to a broader governmental campaign that aimed at increasing centralization and censorship over information flow.
He continued, “In fact Lina Khan, who is over at FTC will administer all this, and oversees antitrust.” “She even said that Breitbart was putting out disinformation. This is consistent with what we saw in the run up to the 2020 election. It wasn’t the FTC, it was the FBI going after Big Tech and teaming with them. Government teamed up with Big Tech in order to limit the information available to the people.
Ohio’s representative highlighted the threat JCPA poses to free speech and expression values as outlined in the First Amendment.
He said, “This whole alliance of Big Government, Big Tech, Big Media to keep us the people from getting facts and truth is a problem. And I see it in the same vein.”
Jordan described the JCPA to be a reconfigured governmental effort to impose the Biden administration’s failed campaign for the federal Disinformation Governance Board. This bureaucraty was marketed as an instrument to protect the public from “disinformation.”
Jordan said, “Remember that this is the same mindset that gave rise to the entire Disinformation Governance Board. And they were going to attempt to run with it.” “This is the concept that they are trying to create in these cartels,” Jordan said.
