GOP Rep Says US Will Have To Get Rid Of Second Amendment Unless Schools Change Teachings

Thursday’s hearing was held by the House Judiciary Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism and Homeland Security. The differences of opinion between Democrats and Republicans were clearly displayed.

Given the sensitive nature of the issue, passions were high as liberal lawmakers focused their attention on weapons while conservatives focused on those who use them. Louie Gohmert (Republican from Texas), a former judge who dealt with felony cases, was part of the latter group. He focused on instilling morality in people using Judeo-Christian principles. He said it was the foundation of our founding principles and the Constitution’s effectiveness.

Gohmert stated that “We need to go back to teaching there’s a right or wrong” or “I agree with everyone here”, and that we would have to eliminate the Second Amendment, Freedom of Speech, Freedom of Assembly, and Freedom of Speech. “This Constitution will not work in the same way that we are teaching children.”

Jack Brewer, a witness at the hearing, was then given the opportunity to speak. Brewer, a minister who is also the Chair of America First Policy Institute’s Center for Opportunity Now claimed that the home environment of mass shooters plays a major role in mass shootings in his opening remarks. Brewer cited a 2016 study showing that 18% of shooters grew up in families with both their parents. He spoke of his youth and stated that he owned an illegal gun, but never used it because he was afraid of his father.

Rep. Madeleine Dean (D-Pa.), laughed at the notion that mass shootings can be attributed to “evil,” children who were raised by single parents, mental illness, or a lack thereof.

“Really?” she questioned. She asked, “Where has humanity gone?”

Dean emphasized the guns and said that it was a “man-made problem” that could be “man solved.”

He said, “To not see that as a root reason to me is idiocy.”

Brewer said that many children in public schools are reading at grades that are several grades lower than they should. He blamed the fact that there are no dads to hold these students accountable. Brewer stated that it was absurd to ignore this.

“Go to prison and speak with the people pulling the trigger!” Brewer dared.

The minister then repeated Gohmert’s assertion that morality is part and parcel of the equation and lamented the fact that the Ten Commandments were not taught in schools and that people don’t have a fear for God.

He said, “We are morally fragile as a nation right at the moment.”
