Two shootings at Half Moon Bay, near San Francisco, resulted in the deaths of seven people and one injury Monday. Police believe the shootings were connected and a suspect is currently in custody.
Mountain Mushroom Farm was attacked and Concord Farms was hit, both located about 30 miles from San Francisco. At 2:20 p.m., police received a call regarding an active shooter. They responded to Concord Farms and found four victims who had been shot and one critically wounded. The victim sustained life-threatening injuries and was taken to Stanford Medical Center.
Concord Farms was three miles away from the second shooting, and police found three more victims of gunshot wounds. According to Debbie Ruddock, Councilmember, the victims were all Chinese farm workers.
After police found him in his car in the parking lot of the sheriff’s office substation, the suspect was identified as Zhao Chunli (67-year-old Half Moon Bay resident). He was quickly arrested. He was reportedly in possession of a semiautomatic handgun at the time he was taken into police custody.
Christina Corpus, San Mateo County Sheriff, stated that “this is a terrible tragedy for this community as well as the families affected by this unspeakable act of violence.”
Although the motive behind the shooting is unknown, it is reported that Chunli worked at one of the farms.
This shooting follows a shooting that left 11 people dead in southern California.
