AOC Floats Coalition Government After McCarthy Fails To Win House Speaker Vote

After Republicans failed to elect a speaker, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.), suggested a possible “coalition Government” in the House of Representatives.

Ocasio-Cortez is a far-left progressive who suggested that Rep. Kevin McCarthy, the Republican leader of California, may need to negotiate with Democrats after he failed in his bid to become speaker.

“I don’t believe Kevin McCarthy has the votes. He is a very personal opponent. His leadership style is not compatible with many Republican members, and most certainly the Democratic Caucus. Ocasio-Cortez said Tuesday night on MSNBC.

“The question is: Is there anyone in their caucus who can create that consensus?” McCarthy’s team might have to join the Democratic Party if there isn’t. If that is the case, how would that look? It’s quite unusual. Could this lead to a possible coalition government? Ocasio-Cortez asked.

“Could we get Democratic chairpersons of committees as a consequence?” She wondered aloud.

She imagines McCarthy approaching Democrats to get the 20 votes needed to become speaker. Democrats would make major concessions to McCarthy in return for his support. This would likely ensure that their members continue to be the leaders of influential House committees. Ocasio Cortez made it clear that this was unlikely to happen.

She told Alex Wagner, MSNBC host, “I’m certainly not saying that our party signaled an openness just yet.” It’s really about the cards in McCarthy’s hand. If he decides to approach the Democratic Caucus then that would be an opportunity for negotiation in itself for a possible coalition government. This is a very unusual time.”

Twenty GOP hardliners refused vote for McCarthy on Tuesday over three ballots. The House adjourned as Republicans consolidated support for one candidate for speaker. McCarthy’s supporters claim that he has not made any promises to change House rules to remove the speaker’s office from power and to allow amendments to be submitted by rank-and-file House members. McCarthy’s aides accuse McCarthy of discrediting the GOP over minor issues, shifting goalsposts, and other such things.

Wednesday will see the House reconvene for a second day in speakership elections. McCarthy will need to make concessions to flip the 15 GOP votes that he needs in order to be elected speaker. He will also have to reach a deal or compromise with Democrats.

Kevin McCarthy is caught in a very intriguing dilemma. He must get these votes somewhere if his goal is to become speaker. If he doesn’t, he won’t be able to get the votes from House Freedom Caucus. Ocasio Cortez reiterated Tuesday to her Instagram followers that he should not approach the Democratic Party to enter into negotiations.

“If this continues, and on and on, and there is no Republican Party speaker nominee, then something has to give.”
