Illinois Officials Plan To House Nearly 700 Migrants In Closed Chicago Kmart

If state officials are successful, hundreds of migrants who were bused from Texas to Chicago, Illinois may soon be accommodated in an old Kmart.

More than 5,100 people have arrived in Chicago since Texas started busing illegal aliens and border crossers to Chicago. Nearly 4,000 of these new arrivals have sought refuge in Chicago, which is funded by local and state taxpayers.

Officials from Illinois’ Department of Human Services want to accommodate nearly 700 migrants in an abandoned Kmart superstore that was closed in 2016. It is located on the city’s Southwest Side, and residents are already raising concerns about the plan.

Tabares stated that she has major concerns about the safety of the community and those who will be living at the location. She also said that she had urged the state legislators to get involved with local residents. [Emphasis added]

Guerrero Cuellar stated that she has serious concerns about the safety of the Kmart facility proposed and its amenities. “I have requested state agencies to suspend this project until they can make sure this facility is built into housing for young migrant families.”

This plan comes after Mayor Lori Lightfoot (D) has angered residents of the city’s South Side by spending millions of tax dollars to shelter illegal aliens and border crossers in an abandoned school building.

Residents have complained that Lightfoot’s administration failed to consider their community before accepting new residents into their neighborhoods. The city spends nearly $7 million annually to provide shelter and services.
