Establishment Outlets, Global Disinformation Index Engage In Disinformation For Lab Leak Theory

Global Disinformation Index (GDI), and establishment outlets like the New York Times, Washington Post, have spread “disinformation” against Sen. Tom Cotton (R. AR) for spreading the increasingly credible theory of a virology laboratory in Wuhan China that caused the coronavirus pandemic.

In February 2020, Cotton suggested that the coronavirus pandemic may have originated in a Wuhan, China virology laboratory.

Now, both the FBI Director Christopher Wray and the Department of Energy (DOE), have stated that the most likely source of the coronavirus pandemic is a laboratory leak in Wuhan.

Although Cotton suggested that the coronavirus pandemic might have originated from China, establishment outlets like the New York Times and Washington Post quickly condemned Cotton for spreading conspiracy theories.

GDI used Cotton’s suggestion that the coronavirus epidemic started in China as part a disinformation campaign in February 2020.

The Times reported that Senator Tom Cotton reiterates the Fringe Theory of Coronavirus Origins. The Times wrote that Cotton was contributing to the “infodemic”.

The Post stated that Tom Cotton “continues to repeat a conspiracy theory about coronavirus that has been debunked.” Although the outlet later updated its article, it still called the theory “fringe.”

Apoorva Mandavilli was a New York Times science reporter who mainly covered the coronavirus pandemic. She wrote that “Someday we’ll stop talking about lab leak theory and perhaps even admit its racist roots.” Unfortunately, this day is not today.

Global Disinformation Index ranked the Washington Post as the number one and 10 most likely outlets to spread disinformation. GDI offers a tool called the Dynamic Exclusion List that blacklists conservative media outlets and reduces their advertising revenue.

GDI targets conservative outlets often for pursuing “adversarial stories,” which may or not be true, but it is based on the targeting of an individual or group. The Times and the Post targeted Senator Cotton because they suggested that the coronavirus pandemic might have originated from China.
