Social media videos show brutal beatings at the San Francisco Mall by a mob made up of young men. Some business owners have decided to close their doors rather than face the violence anymore.
KPIX-TV reported on Friday that a mob attacked the Stonestown Galleria at around 4 p.m. A few teenagers wearing sweatshirts and backpacks attacked an Asian man and threw him to the ground.
KPIX reported that a second attack took place in the food court a short time later. However, it was not clear if this was the same mob or another group of teenagers. Two victims were injured in the attack. After being knocked to the ground, one video shows the victim being stomped upon.
KPIX-TV witnesses to the beatings said they didn’t interfere because they were afraid they would be victimized.
KPIX-TV one food court vendor said that he was closing his business due to the violence.
Guang Wei said, “I’m very afraid,” after his merchandise was destroyed by the mob attack. “I can’t continue doing business here in such an environment.”
KPIX reported that witnesses said fights had become commonplace at the mall, and security guards are often attacked if they try to intervene.
KPIX was told by San Francisco police that they hadn’t arrested any suspects in the fights, but they were increasing patrols at the mall.
Myrna Melgar, San Francisco Supervisor, issued a warning for parents to watch their children’s social media use over fights.
“There have been altercations among young people at Stonestown Mall over the past few weeks, resulting in physical injuries. Stonestown’s private security was overwhelmed, and SFPD officers were sent. Melgar tweeted that “videos of the assaults were posted and promoted via Instagram Live.”
