Texas Governor Greg Abbott stated Saturday that he will seek pardon for an Army Sergeant who was recently convicted for murder in shooting a Black Lives Matter protester at an anti-police demonstration in 2020.
Abbott tweeted that Texas pardons must be approved by the Board of Pardons and Paroles
Abbott stated, “I have made this request and asked the board to expedite it’s review.”
According to the governor, he is looking forward to signing the pardon when it arrives at his desk.
On Friday, Army Sergeant Daniel Perry was convicted for murder in the shooting death of a Black Lives Matter protester with an AK47. The gun was raised towards Perry. Austin Police Department concluded that Perry acted in self defense.
Perry was at Fort Hood at that time and was driving Uber in Austin to make more money on July 25, 2020 when he was confronted by a large group of protesters. According to police, they were blocking the streets of Austin that night as protesters elsewhere in Austin had done during weeks of rioting.
Garrett Foster, 28, was carrying an AK-47 and was one of the protesters. Perry’s defense team claims that protesters surrounded Perry and started pounding on his car. Foster then raised the gun at Perry, prompting Perry to fire with the handgun he legally carries for self-defense.
“When Garrett Foster pointed his AK47 at Daniel Perry,” Doug O’Connell, an attorney for Perry, said that Daniel only had two tenths to defend himself. He chose to live,” Doug O’Connell (an attorney for Perry) stated in a statement to Fox News Digital last year.
It may be legal to carry an assault rifle downtown in Texas. However, it doesn’t make it a good idea. You are responsible for what happens after you point a gun at someone.
Abbott stated that Texas’s “strongest stand your ground laws” cannot be “nullified either by a jury nor a progressive District attorney.”
Jose Garza, the George Soros-funded Travis County District Attorney who brought the case against Perry, has been widely criticised for choosing to pursue charges against Perry for political clout over the merits.
Self-defense is a God-given human right and not a crime. “Unfortunately, Travis County’s Soros-funded DA is more concerned with the radical agenda of dangerous Antifa mobs and BLM mobs that justice,” Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton stated in a statement to Fox News Digital after the Perry verdict.
