New York State’s Attorney General’s Office has announced a statewide program for firearm buybacks that offers financial incentives for surrendering firearms.
Letitia James, New York’s Attorney General, will be hosting the first statewide buyback event on April 29, in her effort to protect New Yorkers from gun violence and keep them safe. In a press release, it is noted that this initiative is part of the efforts made by Attorney-General James to combat gun violence and protect people from harm.
On April 29, 2019, nine different locations across the state will be offering prepaid gift cards for people who surrender guns.
The value of assault rifles, ghost weapons, and so-called “assault weapons” will each be $500. Individuals will get $500 for their first handgun, but only $150 for additional handguns.
In the press release, it is stated that “this amnesty program will not ask any questions about the person dropping off the gun.”
James made headlines last month when her New York City office held an event called Drag Story Hour.
In a press release issued last month, it was stated that the “New York Attorney General James along with a large coalition of advocacy groups & elected leaders today stood unwaveringly and proudly in support for the LGBTQ+ community and hosted a Drag Story Hour Readathon in New York City. ”
The Center hosted four Story Hours in a row, with nearly 200 guests. The Drag Kings Queens & Royalty of Drag Story Hour NYC were the hosts. Since 1983, The Center has served as a resource and home for LGBTQ+ people and their allies.
