Americans Are Getting Tired Of Tipping, Survey Shows

According to new Bankrate data released this week, Americans tip less for a wide range of services. This trend has been steady over the past few years.

The tipping for dining acceptance is different depending on the service

According to the study, 40% of U.S. adult riders in taxis/rideshares tip their driver. However, only 22% of Gen Zers and 30% of millennials, as well as 36% of males, always do so. This is compared to 45% for women, 51% for Gen Xers and 56% for baby boomers.

According to the study, 33% of U.S. adults say tipping has gotten out-of-control. This feeling is more common among older generations and those with higher incomes. Gen Xers, baby boomers, and 27% of millennials agree with this sentiment.

What is the relationship between income levels and tipping behavior?
According to Bankrate data, forty percent of households earning $100,000 or more per year say that tipping has become out of hand. This compares to 34% who earn between $80,000 to $99,999, 33% between $50,000 to $79,999, and 23% of households earning less than $50,000.

Benevolence is still important, according to the study, 35% of respondents said they felt good after leaving a generous tip.

Bankrate conducted a survey from May 3-5 2023 with a sample of 2,437 U.S. adult respondents.
