France Deploys Thousands Of Police Officers Amid Riots, Hundreds Arrested

As a fourth night of riots nears, officials in France have deployed 45,000 police officers as well as armored vehicles. The riots are the result of an officer shooting a teenager to death during a traffic check.
Unrest has affected many French cities, including Paris, Marseilles, Lyon, Toulouse and Lille.

Nahel M. was killed by the police in Nanterre, a suburb of Paris. This incident, which was recorded on video, sparked riots in Europe.

Gerald Darmanin, the Interior Minister, said that 270 arrests were made on Friday night. This brings the total to 1,100 arrests since protests began.

In Marseille, rioters broke into a gun shop and stole some hunting rifles, but did not steal any ammunition.

Benoit Payan, the mayor of Marseille, tweeted on Friday that France needs to send in more troops because “the scenes of violence and pillage are unacceptable.”

Darmanin has requested that local authorities cease bus and tram traffic at 9 pm, adding that he is deploying 45,000 police officers.

He wrote: “The next few hours will be decisive, and I know that I can count upon your flawless efforts,” to the firefighters and police officers of the country.

He said, “Quite simply we are not ruling out any hypotheses and we will see what the President of Republic decides after tonight.”
