The South Carolina Supreme Court ruled that one of the strictest abortion restrictions in the country can go into effect.
The court issued its decision on Wednesday which prohibits the majority of abortions after six weeks. It stated that the law is constitutional.
Gov. Henry McMaster, the governor of South Carolina, signed an updated bill in May. The bill included exceptions to protect the life and health of the mother as well as medical emergencies. It also allowed for fatal fetal abnormalities. The law allows abortions up to 12 weeks in cases of rape or incest.
An injunction was filed from Planned Parenthood South Atlantic, the Greenville Women’s Clinic, and two doctors almost immediately filed after the bill was signed.
McMaster, in a written statement released after the published ruling on Wednesday, said that “the Supreme Court’s decision marks a historic moment in the history of our state and is the culmination years of hard work and determination of so many people in our State to ensure the sanctity is protected.” With this victory, South Carolina is reaffirmed as being one of the most pro-life states in America.
South Carolina Attorney-General Alan Wilson called the decision a historic, huge victory.
Wilson said, “The South Carolina Supreme Court’s historic decision upholding the state’s Fetal Heartbeat Act represents a major victory in our efforts to save innocent lives and protect the unborn.”
This ruling comes just months after the high court of the state consisted only of male justices after the last female justice retired.
Christale Spanie, the chair of the South Carolina Democratic Party, released the following statement in response to the unanimous decision by the South Carolina Supreme Court.
“Thanks to the MAGA Republicans in our legislature, an all-male court has upheld horrifying and dystopian legislation that bans abortion in South Carolina before many women even have the chance to find out they’re pregnant. Doctors and nurses will be threatened with fines and jail time just for providing vital health care, rape and incest victims will be forced to share the crimes committed against them just to get the care they need, and women in rural, low-income, and communities of color across the Palmetto State who already face insurmountable barriers to health care will be disproportionately impacted.
Sorry you are so upset Christale Spanie, but I am thankful that SC voted to protect unborn babies. They are innocent and deserve the chance to live. God does not make mistakes, so why should anyone play God and take a baby’s life?
