Oh Hanukkah! Kamala Harris’ Husband Doug Emhoff Stumbles in Telling the Holiday Story

On social media, Kamala Harris’s husband, Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff is mocked for fumbling the Hanukkah story when he posted an image of him and Kamala illuminating a menorah.

“‘The story of Hanukkah and the story of the Jewish people has always been one of hope and resilience. In the Hanukkah story, the Jewish people were forced into hiding,”‘ he wrote in a post on X that has since been deleted. “No one thought they would survive or that the few drops of oil they had would last. But they survived and the oil kept burning.”

Emhoff continued, “During the eight days they spent in hiding, people recited prayers and carried on their traditions. Hanukkah is a celebration of dedication. During those nights, the Maccabees committed themselves to keeping hope and faith in oil, their Judaism, and each other.”

He said, “I think about that story during these dark times.”

Yeah, not quite. Not at all. Did he or some clueless employee write it? To be honest, I don’t know which is worse. It’s difficult to believe that this Jewish Second Gentleman posted such a blatantly wrong explanation of Hanukkah.

Hanukkah commemorates the rededication to the Second Temple of Jerusalem in the second century BCE during the Maccabean Revolt. The festival is also centered around the miracle of lighting the menorah. A small amount of oil that was meant to last only one day ended up lasting eight.

Mark Levin, a conservative radio host, responded to the tweet with “As I’ve said, another idiot.” Before the post was removed, many others pointed out Emhoff’s mistake.

I’m sure an intern did some research before making this post. This leads me to believe Emhoff tried to remember the story himself but failed miserably. Doug Emhoff would probably not know the difference between potato latkes and sufganiyah.

He hasn’t shared a post that replaces the incorrect story on his Twitter account.

The Daily Mail reports that Emhoff has “taken the lead in the administration to speak out against the anti-Semitism wave.”

The paper reported that Emhoff, speaking at a ceremony on Thursday to light the National Menorah, said there is a “crisis” of antisemitism in America which makes it difficult for Jews to celebrate Hanukkah.

It’s also not helpful to be ignorant of the true story behind Hanukkah.

He also criticized the presidents of three elite universities who testified on Capitol Hill about antisemitism on campuses. He said that this was a good example of how many Jews felt ‘unmoored and fearful’ due to the backlash against Israel’s response to Gaza’s war.

Emhoff stated that the lack of moral clarity by some of the presidents at our elite universities in describing the call for the genocide against Jews as antisemitic is unacceptable.

Let me be clear. Antisemitism is when Jews are singled out for antisemitic hatred and targeted because of their religious or ethnic identity. It must be condemned, and it must also be condemned unambiguously and without context’.

She did not mention the Israeli children killed or abducted by Hamas terrorists. Ella Emhoff is Kamala Harris’s stepdaughter. She was not raised Jewish, and she does not identify as a Jew.
