Newt Gingrich, the former House Speaker who served as the speaker of the House from 1993 to 1997, wrote an op/ed after Donald Trump’s victories in the New Hampshire and Iowa primaries. He urged Trump in his op/ed to use a strategy he called a “sandwich”, throughout the rest of the campaign.
Gingrich’s comments are exactly what I thought.
Gingrich outlined the truth in an op-ed published on Wednesday, titled “The Longest General Election.”
The longest election campaign in the history of our country is now underway.
The Republican nomination was determined on Jan. 23, following President Donald Trump’s victories in Iowa, New Hampshire, and the national polls.
Never before has anyone tried to hold a national discussion 286 days before an election.
The Trump campaign and Republicans will face constant pressure from the media to come up with something negative to use to undermine and attack them.
Newt had it right.
A long Republican primary season, which would have provided liberal media with an abundance of red meat that they had created themselves, is not going to happen. Gingrich believes that this means the left-wing media puppets are in desperate need of content.
Gingrich said that a “highly bored” national audience has led to a “state shock”. He also stated that there will be “constant pressure to find negative things to attack the Trump campaign and Republicans in general.”
Gingrich said that the lengthy campaign would be “a significant challenge” for Biden’s administration.
Joe Biden and his supporters would have enjoyed watching the Republicans fight for months on end (and cataloging every candidate’s research against Trump). In a Biden-perfect world, every piece of political news for the next six months would be negative and focused on Republicans.
The 2024 political drama is about President Trump dominating and leading the landscape, unlike anything seen in recent times.
The contrast between a series of Trump rallies and the slow, passive, and meager Biden effort will be amazing. Biden’s supporters are not going to cheer 20,000 or more for a 90-minute speech. The asymmetry of the rhythm and pattern between both campaigns will be evident.
Gingrich wrote that “the biggest advantage President Trump enjoys is his ability to campaign in the states where he can grow the party, strengthen candidates for Governor, U.S. Senate, and U.S. House.” He added: “The second advantage is Trump and team now have the time to develop positive themes and issues throughout the country.”
The “Sandwich” Strategy
Gingrich says that Trump and his team have the advantage of having time to develop positive themes, allowing them to create a “sandwich strategy”.
They can look back at the accomplishments of Trump’s first tenure to get the bottom slice of bread. Trump, as a former President, is uniquely qualified to explain what he’s done and what he plans to do.
His administration increased the economy. The administration made America more energy independent, while also lowering prices for gasoline, heating oil, and natural gas. The Trump administration controlled inflation. The Trump administration controlled the border. It supported law enforcement efforts and combated crime. It stopped terrorism in the world and exercised power effectively. It strengthened NATO, and it negotiated effectively with foreign governments about trade and other issues.
The sandwich’s middle section contrasts Trump with Biden. Almost every poll shows that the majority of Americans believe Trump’s policies have worked better than Biden’s policies.
Trump and Republicans could describe an extraordinary future that would strengthen America.
They can discuss how to improve the standard of living for Americans and stop illegal immigration, drug use, and criminal activity. They can talk about a much better education system. They can discuss a reformed and renewed military that can protect America, assist our allies, and deter our enemies. They can discuss breakthroughs in artificial intelligence, space exploration, and health outcomes that will benefit Americans.
The former Speaker’s “sandwich strategy” is well-thought-out and would benefit Trump’s election campaign no doubt. However, it is unclear whether he can maintain the discipline necessary to adhere to this plan. Surprisingly, even Axios believes he can:
Beyond Donald Trump’s courtroom, onstage, and online antics, something shocking and telling has happened: He is running a well-managed and disciplined presidential campaign.
His 2024 campaign is more traditional, dare we even say sophisticated than his White House or two previous campaigns.
Can Trump do it again?
This time I believe he will. Mostly, anyway. After all, maybe old dogs can still learn new tricks. Let’s hope it is true.
