Nikki Haley Breaks Free from Pledge to Endorse Trump

Published on

Nikki Haley, the GOP presidential candidate who appeared on NBC’s “Meet the Press” Sunday said she was no longer “bound” by the pledge the GOP candidates made to the RNC that they would endorse and support the nominee. Her reasons for breaking this commitment were…interesting.

During an interview with NBC News’ “Meet the Press” moderator Kristen Welker, Nikki Haley stated that she is not committed to endorsing former President Donald Trump if he becomes the Republican nominee.

Haley emphasized her freedom to make her own decision, saying, “No, I think I’ll make what decision I want to make, but that’s not something I’m thinking about.” She added that she does not view endorsements in terms of winning or losing, stating, “if you talk about an endorsement, you’re talking about a loss. I don’t think like that.”

She continued, “When you are in a race you don’t worry about losing.” “You just keep going forward.”

It comes days after Donald Trump, the former president, won another round of primary and caucus elections and not too long after Haley was beaten in South Carolina, where she lives.

In the interview with “Meet the Press”, the Governor makes a statement that sounds like she’s dealing with cognitive dissonance.

Haley was asked if voters heading to the polls for the GOP primary on Tuesday should know her position on Trump. She continued to dodge the issue, saying: “When you ask Donald Trump if I would get his support, then I’ll talk about it.” My focus right now is on ‘How can we reach as many voters as possible? How do we win?'”

This statement represents a shift in her attitude towards a possible endorsement. Haley said in July that she would back Trump if he won, but not because she wanted to see a president Kamala Harris. She was referring to Vice President Kamala Harris becoming President if President Joe Biden were to lose his second term.

Asking if the former President Trump will support Governor Haley is a waste of time. She won’t be the nominee. It seems to be a waste of Nikki Haley’s time and money at this stage in the cycle to continue asking the question “How can we win?” This week’s Super Tuesday primary will almost certainly cement the fact that Donald Trump is now the nominee. The reality is that all Republicans must accept: Trumpers, Never-Trumpers, and everyone in between will have to get used to this fact.

Governor Haley is a strong woman who doesn’t quit easily. That’s not a bad trait for any endeavor. At this stage of the campaign, it’s hard not to be reminded of a famous W.C. Fields quote:

“If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again. Then quit. No use being a damn fool about it.”.

Governor Haley has reached that point. It makes sense to wait until Super Tuesday results come in. If the Super Tuesday results go as heavily in favor of Donald Trump as they have done so far, Nikki Haley will be a “damn fool” for staying in the race.
